As we drive, my heart is still beating hard, as though I’m still on the run.

“Who was that?” Rachelle asks, her eyes dancing from the road to me. “And what happened at the hospital? Was Joel there? Is he OK?”

I’m not confident Rachelle won’t send updates about Joel’s condition to her gossip sites.

“I don’t know,” I say, answering both questions at once. Is Joel OK? He’s been in a coma a lot longer than I was. I didn’t speak to any medical professionals. I didn’t read his chart. But he was breathing.

The person I’m more worried about is me. And who I was. A cheater, a killer? I feel sick as Rachelle takes tight turns around the downtown blocks.

“I think we lost her,” Rachelle says, glancing in the rearview mirror.

The car lurches, and a loud banging sound comes from the engine. “C’mon, c’mon,” she pleads, rubbing her hands nervously over the steering wheel.

The last thing I want right now is a car breakdown in the middle of the night in a strange city.

I go through the events of the night in my head: my memories of Joel-not-Joel, the bursting of my bubble of certainty that all would be clear if I could just touch Joel, see him, talk to him. I won’t be talking to him anytime soon, it seems. I have no idea where to go from here, but I’d rather be with Willow than this young fan. I wonder how to reach her.

“Can I use your phone?” I ask Rachelle. It seems obvious now; why didn’t I think of it before?

“Um, wait—” she says, glancing at me while still maneuvering the car.

But her phone is sitting in the console between our seats, and I pick it up. Messages flash up on the screen:
