âGet it off me.â A sharp shout broke into Beatriceâs sleep, and she sat upright. Nell thrashed about on her bed, yelling. Beatrice threw back her blanket and stood up.
âShhh, itâs just a nightmare.â She reached out to touch Nell and soothe her, but Nellâs arm connected with hers in the dark with a painful slap. A string of curses flew out of Nellâs mouth, and Beatrice blinked hard. Sheâd never heard most of those words said aloud, and she stumbled backwards at the brutality of the torrent, landing on her bottom on her bed with a soft thump.
âNell. Nell...â Beatrice tried to use a quiet voice, but nothing changed the violent way Nell wrestled with her nightmare. âLady Eleanor.â Beatrice tried her sternest voice, and Nell ceased moving. âThatâs it, quiet now, it was just a nightmare.â She pushed herself back up and reached out to stroke Nellâs cheek. Nell grabbed her wrist and pulled Beatriceâs hand towards her mouth. The harsh brush of Nellâs lips over her palm sent a rush of heat flying down Beatriceâs spine, and her legs wobbled.
âNell. Shh, wake up now.â
Nell groaned and half sat. âWhat happened?â
âI think you had a nightmare.â
Nellâs breath was hot on Beatriceâs palm. âDid I disturb you? Iâm sorry.â The ease of the apology set this moment apart from earlier in the night, and Beatrice sucked in a deep breath. Sheâd come to terms with Nellâs behaviour at the funeral and she understood why Nell hadnât been able to stand beside her and be the strong support sheâd thought sheâd wanted from her.
âYou donât need to apologise for a nightmare. Was it the war?â Beatrice cursed herself. What a silly question.
âNo, I just have nightmares thanks to my perfect upbringing with my wealthy titled parents.â A subtle edge of humour rinsed away Beatriceâs worries.
âIâm sorry. And thank you.â For your war service, for being there at this personal cost. Beatrice wanted to trace her finger along Nellâs bottom lip, but she darenât take a liberty while Nell was recovering from a nightmare. A shiver raced up her spine, and it was both wrong and right at the same time.
âIf anyone should be sorry, itâs me. I have these...ahh...episodes, ever since, well, never mind why. And it helps to wait them out in the dark, but I donât usually have a loud nightmare.â There was a vulnerability in Nellâs voice that Beatrice hadnât heard before, and it made her heart ache.
âWhy do you think it was different this time?â
Nell growled, rather like an angry kitten, and pushed Beatriceâs hand away. âI donât particularly like to be the subject of analysis.â
âIâm sorry.â
âAre you going to spend your whole life sorry for the goddamned war? It was hardly your fault the German Empire decided to implode, or an argument between cousins caused the deaths of millions. Iâm one of the lucky ones, donât you know?â Nellâs cutting tone belied her own sacrifices.
âYou are one of the lucky ones.â Beatrice needed to soothe Nell, just as she would a scared animal caught in barbed wire.
