Chapter Twenty-Four

Jack

Thomas and I met with Mindi and Seth at the morgue, and the note as Justine predicted, did say, Can’t See.

“What does all of this mean?” Thomas asks as we get back into the car to head to the station, while Seth and Mindi work their magic.

“I don’t know. Absolutely none of this is making any sense. People are being killed. We have missing files and statements. Cryptic messages being sent with parts of someone’s body, if they are from the same body. Hell, we don’t even know that much,” I say with as much frustration in my voice, that I feel all over.

“The missing files and statements, that’s an in-house problem,” Thomas says.

“Yeah, and?”

“Well, that’s something that we can absolutely look into. How many other case files have gone missing, maybe we can narrow down a timeframe and figure out the circumstances and maybe the person.”

“Please elaborate, Thomas, my head is already hurting,” I tell him while rubbing my temples.

“Really? That’s how you talk to your partner, who's trying to help put pieces together?” He chuckles when I give him a look. “Fine, if we can find out how many other case files have gone missing, then we can deduce whether this was intentional or just a lazy clerk.”

“If it was intentional, how do we decipher who did it?” I ask, intrigued now.

“We look to see who was on board at the time and who would have handled the paperwork. Come on, we may be homicide cops, but we know how to follow the evidence to where it leads us,” he mutters with disdain.

“True,” I say thinking over everything and wondering who would be stupid enough to put themselves in that position.

“Thomas, I don’t like the idea that someone in the department would intentionally destroy statements.”

“I don’t either to be honest. It not only makes us look incompetent, but it also makes trying to get justice for our victims that much harder,” he says as he sighs heavily.

“Were we wrong to take things at face value when David Hershal confessed to it being an accidental shooting? Should we have done more investigating?” I ponder out loud.

“I don’t know. I mean two years ago, everything seemed on the up and up and we had no reason to question anything. We had the confession, the witnesses, and the gun, but now with everything happening, I can understand why you're asking and wondering. It does make it seem like we took the easy way out.”

I just nod my head, because what else can I do?

We get back to the station and Amanda greets us.

“Hey, sergeants, Mr. Billings is here to talk with you. I have placed him in the conference room.”

“Thanks, Amanda. Hey, out of curiosity, when did you start here at the PD?” I ask as nonchalantly as possible.

“Oh, I actually worked here as an intern while in high school and then, came on board full time after I graduated, so about three years now.” She looks at me curiously.

“I just want to say, thank you for everything you do.
