Chapter 7

Gina was out of the truck before Toby could come to a full stop. He’d pulled up close to the main entrance.

“Go inside and find your family. I’ll find a parking space and be right behind you.”

She tried to smile but couldn’t imagine what look was on her face. Her fingers still tingled where his lips had grazed them. Why did he have to become so not-Toby right now? She didn’t know what to do with his solicitude. As if she wasn’t wound up enough worrying about Gigi, he had to pull out his gentlemen’s handbook and start practicing chivalry. She did not have time to play the damsel in distress to his knight in shining armor.

Inside the waiting area of the emergency room, Gina rushed to her father. “How is she? What happened? Who was with her?”

Her father wrapped her in his arms, trapping her hands between them—stilling them. “Take a breath. Just breathe, Gina. They were having a party in the solarium. She had been visiting with friends when she said she felt sick to her stomach. When she tried to get up, the room whirled. There was an attendant close by. He caught her before she fell and bumped her head.”

She pushed away from him. “Did she pass out?”

“We’re not sure. Dr. Jacobs called and spoke to the attendant and got more details about how she was before the EMTs arrived. He said it could be as simple as she just stood up too quickly, or she could have vertigo, or even an ear infection. Her heart rate and blood pressure are a little low, but not too much below average. I’m sure she’s going to be fine. I told your mother not to call you and disturb the party.”

“What? How could you even think of suggesting that? Can I go back and see her?”

Daddy laughed. Laughed at her. Just then, Toby came in. He paused as if unsure of his welcome into their little group. She was unsure, too. Usually Toby was the one in need of a good fussing at, but her father was still grinning and looking a little too interested in the guy standing there in a crisp white dress shirt underneath his dark jacket.

He needed a haircut and a shave. For all she knew he had some disfiguring scar underneath all that stubble. But he’d pushed his hair out of his eyes and the clear blue, almost silver of them, was piercing. And he was watching her, concerned. She’d never seen Toby Hendricks concerned about anyone but himself. Except maybe his grandfather.

“Daddy, this is my friend Toby. Toby, this is my father, George.”

He reached out his hand. “Nice to meet you, sir.”

Her father pumped his hand and smiled. “I read your column in the Sentinel every day. Is that how you two met? Were you covering some political story and ran into my Gina with her fancy friends?”

“Daddy, stop.”

The security doors leading to the patient area opened and Gary walked through. Gina chewed her lower lip.
