Half an hour later, Keera entered the attorney-client room at the King County jail after going through the usual machinations. LaRussa entered as before and sat in a plastic chair across from her. “Did you speak to Mary Bell?”

Keera told him what Bell had said. “No one from the prosecution team has contacted her, and I’m not sure why anything she said would be relevant. We also spoke to Eric Fields.”

“What did he have to say?”

“Nothing that alarms me.” She told LaRussa the gist of the conversation. “I am concerned that Jack Worthing, whoever he is, also spoke to him.”

“In person?”

“No, by phone. Bell said she suspected the person was disguising their voice, but didn’t have any real basis that was the case. Again, nothing either person had to say alarms me, but I am concerned about who Jack Worthing is and his purpose.”

“Has he emailed again?”

“No.”

“Maybe he won’t,” LaRussa said.

“Time will tell. We also received the police report,” Keera said. “The medical examiner concluded homicide and determined your wife was shot from a distance of three to five feet.”

“We knew that; didn’t we?” he said.

“Something else of interest. The Latent Fingerprint Unit found Lisa Bennet’s fingerprints on the kitchen counter, the refrigerator door handle, and the handle of the top oven.”

“Maybe she opened them. Why is that of interest?”

“She couldn’t definitively recall opening the refrigerator to get Anne a glass of water, then said she did recall it. There’d be no reason for her to open the oven, or to lock it. I think she’s hiding something. I’m a good judge of people’s tells, their body movements. She kept breaking eye contact and pausing before she answered. I’m wondering if her fingerprint near the burn mark our investigator found on the oven door handle has some significance. If she locked the oven.”

“Why would she open the oven, or lock it?”

“I don’t know yet. Another thing. She arrived at the house carrying a large handbag that looked heavy. The muscles of her arm strained when she lifted it onto her shoulder. I’m wondering if she brought something with her.”

“What did she say?”

“She became reticent and said she carries a lot of unnecessary stuff in that bag. Plausible, except when she left the bag appeared noticeably lighter,” Keera said. “She came out of the house and threw the bag in the back seat.”

“You think she brought something to the house? The gun?”

“She could have brought the gun, but that wouldn’t be what made the bag heavy. If I’m right. Can you think of anything?”

LaRussa shook his head. “No.”

Keera changed gears. “We also got back the toxicology lab work. Anne had high levels of Oxycontin and Vicodin in her system.”

“Again, we suspected that was the case.”

“We did, but what I don’t understand is, if Dr. Bennet was concerned Anne was becoming addicted, why didn’t she change the prescription? Fewer pills or a lesser dose? The prescription bottles and medical records don’t indicate she did either, which makes her argument of concern less believable.
