The next day, at the Prytaneum, my mind keeps wandering. As we flew over Hades’ palace, I thought I saw him, for a split second, standing in the doorway, looking up at the skies as if he expected us. But when I’d twisted in Alecto’s arms, the doors were closed, the palace as desolate and still as ever. I find myself wondering what he does all day. Does he sit in the dark rooms of his fortress, brooding? Does he go to the Elysian Fields and spend time with all the heroes and celebrities? Does he look at calendars of all the mortal festivals and decide which ones to go to?

He’s the god we never speak of, never study, never pray to. Back when Bree and I had done our project on Artemis, this other kid, Eric, had chosen Hades. When our teacher found out, his parents had been called to the school and he had to start again, choosing Ares. He left, I remember, before we started high school. His family moved to the mainland.

‘Corey,’ Alecto says in a low voice. ‘Another new one.’ She nods at a middle-aged woman making her way reluctantly towards us.

When the woman turns to look behind her, I follow her gaze.

To where Bree is standing in the archway, her mouth an ‘O’ of shock.
