It was no surprise to Mark that Tommy refused to head into Kira City, nor was it unexpected that Kris was so keen for a night on the town that he pulled out his favorite shirt, vest, and neckerchief to wear with his jeans and boots. When they entered the royal garage after dinner, they found Ava and Cyrus waiting beside a lustrous cream car. The pair frowned as Mark and Kris approached.

“Good evening,” Cyrus said pleasantly. He wore an olive-green, long-sleeved tunic over black pants, his outfit achieving a casual kind of refinement.

Ava had chosen a simpler style, possibly believing she was capable of passing as a regular citizen. The combination was right—burgundy jeans and a silk shift, her hair in a high ponytail—but somehow, the result was conspicuously beautiful. He recognized the jeans from their gardening day and swore the fabric had been tailored to grasp her body and hers alone.

He tried not to stare as she eyed Kris over and asked bluntly, “What are you wearing?”

Kris gave a sardonic smile. “Cowboy.”

“Giveaway,” she corrected with a frown. “I thought we were trying not to attract attention.”

Kris snorted. “I never agreed to that.”

“We’re going into the city. It’s implied.”

“Not to me,” he said. “Is this the part where you call me a fool again? Keep up the trend?”

She inhaled sharply.

“Let’s go,” Mark said, with a silencing frown at Kris. What was his problem? “Zara’s waiting for us.”

They piled in, brothers in the back, Cyrus in the front with Ava. The car was impressive, particularly compared to Mark’s old farm truck. The upholstery was plush, not wearing thin; the gearstick seemed to move beneath Ava’s palm like rushing liquid, not requiring any wrenching or cursing; and the steering wheel was the same flawless cream as the exterior paint, worlds away from his truck’s simple vinyl.

In the city, she navigated down a narrow, cobbled alley and pulled into a single parking spot behind a cluster of multi-storied buildings in honey-colored stone. The Kiralian security team parked across the entrance to the laneway, and another pulled up at the opposite end, blocking it off. The guards hung back, granting the young royals a semblance of privacy, and even Erwin waited at a distance. A third team had come ahead, waiting for them inside the bar.

“Where do we go?” Cyrus smoothed the front of his tunic as he glanced around.

“Hey, Ava!” Zara’s call came from one end of the laneway. “They won’t let me through!”

“She’s with us.” Ava raised a hand at the guards.

In a blur of gray and bright yellow, Zara bolted across the distance and threw herself around Ava in a hug. “You guys really came!” When Zara sprang back, she scanned the men around her with a smile. “Anyway, how about we go and—oh, mother—” She clamped a hand over her mouth and dropped into a sharp curtsey. Her voice was stifled as she said, “Hey, Your Majesty. Your Highnesses.”

Mark smiled, Kris grinned, and Cyrus looked at her lowered head with a fondness that suggested he’d met her before.
