Chapter Thirteen
Because Samantha dropped her defensiveness and showed her parents her true feelings regarding Carterâs paternal rights being honored, Joe and Lindy immediately capitulated and added a tenth item to the decree. Their openness to seeing their daughterâs needs, to trying to understand her, and to meeting her needs made the future look brighter.
And gave Megan a much-needed reminder.
Things werenât always going to fit in pretty little boxes. Life, with all of its people with their own individual emotions and needs and wants, was messy.
And still beautiful.
Megan met with Samantha at the library while Danny took care of getting the amended and notarized decree filed, then they were heading back to Milwaukee. She would remain in town at least a few more days, and then make trips back and forth at least twice a week. Danny had suggested the possibility of virtual meetings, at one point when Samantha had excused herself to the restroom, but the Eversons had quickly negated that plan. With Meganâs full support.
Her presence clearly gave Samantha security, was something the young woman trusted, and until they got to the root of whatever was driving her, Meganâs physical presence mattered. She was further pleased by the fact that the Eversons answered before she even had a chance to weigh in. While she didnât yet know who or what had turned Samantha against her parents, Megan believed that Joe and Lindy were completely sincere in their desire to do whatever it took to ensure their daughterâs well-being.
They were willing to pay whatever it took. For Samanthaâs services, Dannyâs expertise and any other expense caring for their daughter would incur. Theyâd spare nothing for the best for their child.
Megan got that feeling in a whole new way as she waited for Danny to gas up the car to head back to Milwaukee. Heâd fly out later that day, she was sure, but they had to talk first.
And suddenly, what she wanted, needed, felt, didnât matter a whit when compared to the well-being of the new life she carried.
A jolt passed through her as the thought of her new status took hold again. She was pregnant.
She was pregnant!
Vacillating between an inner sense of knowing, of acceptance, and shock at the reality of the life-changing news, she let it all wash over her. Didnât judge, or decide, question or worry for those moments.
Taking on a new reality, most particularly one of such magnitude, was a process she had to allow herself. She knew that.
Sometimes knowing and doing were worlds apart.
And the humongous change she was experiencing wasnât just hers.
It was Dannyâs, too. They might be using her body for the event, but the result belonged equally to both of them. The responsibility for the result rested on each of them. She wasnât solely in control. Which meant that she couldnât solely design how her new future was going to look.
And, oh God, she was pregnant! With Danny Tremaineâs baby. The thought was so preposterous she couldnât wrap her mind around it.
And her heart.
