THE PHONE RANG as Ross was getting ready for bed. He picked it up quickly so the sound wouldn’t wake Jennifer, who’d gone to sleep half an hour earlier.

The line was silent, and then Drew spoke. “Someone,” he said, “seems to have told my wife about Jennifer’s allegation.”

“Lucy made it home.” Ross had been concerned about her emotional state, but not so much that he could forbid her to drive.

“Yes, big brother. She’s home. Safe and sound. So, what did you tell her?”

“She figured it out for herself.”

“She took a wild guess and you confirmed it.”

Ross stepped over to his bedroom windows and closed the venetian blinds. “I told you I wouldn’t cover for you.” Though, seeing Lucy that afternoon, he had wished he’d been able to.

Drew made a frustrated sound. “Can I at least assume you had the tact to conduct this conversation in private? Not in front of a hundred people?”

Not in front of their parents, was what he meant. Ross wished his brother had the guts to say it. But he was scared, of course. He must be. Facing consequences he’d probably told himself he could avoid.

Ross wondered what Lucy had said to him, how she’d handled herself.

“Mom saw her leave,” he said after a moment. “Looking upset. She asked questions.”

“Oh good Lord. You didn’t tell her, too?”

“No. I said she asked questions, not that I answered them.” He’d attributed Lucy’s grim demeanor to pregnancy–induced moodiness, and Katherine seemed to accept the explanation.

Drew made a relieved sound. “Good. Because if she heard it the wrong way, or believed it… I just wouldn’t want to stress her out right now. Not while she’s recovering.”

“I worry about that, too,” Ross said, glad to hear his brother express concern about their mother’s health, though not entirely trusting his motives.

“Well, Mom’s always been strong. We’ve got that on our side, at least.”

Ross ignored the comment. “You’ve made a mess here. It’s time to start cleaning it up. And it would be easier on all of us if you’d decide to be honest and take responsibility for what you’ve done.” Even Katherine, when she found out, would probably be able to handle it better if Drew could act like an adult.

But he wasn’t ready to hear it. “Christ. Spare me another of your lectures, big brother.”

Ross thought about counting to ten but doubted it would help. He walked over to the nightstand. “Don’t want to hear my opinion? Don’t call me.”

And he hung up the phone.
