THE PHONE RANG as Ross was getting ready for bed. He picked it up quickly so the sound wouldnât wake Jennifer, whoâd gone to sleep half an hour earlier.
The line was silent, and then Drew spoke. âSomeone,â he said, âseems to have told my wife about Jenniferâs allegation.â
âLucy made it home.â Ross had been concerned about her emotional state, but not so much that he could forbid her to drive.
âYes, big brother. Sheâs home. Safe and sound. So, what did you tell her?â
âShe figured it out for herself.â
âShe took a wild guess and you confirmed it.â
Ross stepped over to his bedroom windows and closed the venetian blinds. âI told you I wouldnât cover for you.â Though, seeing Lucy that afternoon, he had wished heâd been able to.
Drew made a frustrated sound. âCan I at least assume you had the tact to conduct this conversation in private? Not in front of a hundred people?â
Not in front of their parents, was what he meant. Ross wished his brother had the guts to say it. But he was scared, of course. He must be. Facing consequences heâd probably told himself he could avoid.
Ross wondered what Lucy had said to him, how sheâd handled herself.
âMom saw her leave,â he said after a moment. âLooking upset. She asked questions.â
âOh good Lord. You didnât tell her, too?â
âNo. I said she asked questions, not that I answered them.â Heâd attributed Lucyâs grim demeanor to pregnancyâinduced moodiness, and Katherine seemed to accept the explanation.
Drew made a relieved sound. âGood. Because if she heard it the wrong way, or believed it⦠I just wouldnât want to stress her out right now. Not while sheâs recovering.â
âI worry about that, too,â Ross said, glad to hear his brother express concern about their motherâs health, though not entirely trusting his motives.
âWell, Momâs always been strong. Weâve got that on our side, at least.â
Ross ignored the comment. âYouâve made a mess here. Itâs time to start cleaning it up. And it would be easier on all of us if youâd decide to be honest and take responsibility for what youâve done.â Even Katherine, when she found out, would probably be able to handle it better if Drew could act like an adult.
But he wasnât ready to hear it. âChrist. Spare me another of your lectures, big brother.â
Ross thought about counting to ten but doubted it would help. He walked over to the nightstand. âDonât want to hear my opinion? Donât call me.â
And he hung up the phone.
