Spiritual Health
I describe spiritual health to survivors as the ability to stay intimately connected to God when circumstances in their lives feel overwhelming. Spiritually healthy individuals choose to turn to the Father to interpret bad things that happen. They avoid using people or objects to numb their pain. Healthy Christians know what helps them return to joy when their joy is disrupted. They know that the voice of God gives life (see John 6:63).
Survivors are seldom in touch with what makes them happy. I am frequently asked what I do when I am sad. I answer that the bathtub is my healing retreat. At the end of the day when I am troubled, I take a hot bath and ask God to tell me the truth that I need to know about the situation. Listening to worship music on a long walk is another act that makes my heart happy. I encourage people to find what restores joy for them. Many think that the only correct answer is to read the Bible. I remind them that healthy people do not feel religious restrictions, and that God speaks in many ways.
Healthy people choose to process pain with God and other trustworthy people. They know when Godâs voice is speaking to their hearts (see John 10:1â5). They trust Jesus. Freedom in Jesus allows a person in pain to know that nothing is too extreme for Him to heal: âFor nothing will be impossible with Godâ (Luke 1:37).
Many survivors are afraid to process abuse memories because they fear that something bad will happen to them. Enduring many years of trauma has put them into a fearful state. Their fear will dissipate, however, as they realize that nothing bad will happen to them in our ministry time together. Healthy people are not afraid to remember the past, no matter what that past might be.
Survivors who forgive can have a good perspective on mental, emotional, social and spiritual health. Reconstructing their minds with truth will help them find that path to health.
