It took less than an hour to get to the group. They seemed to walk at a glacial pace. Perhaps the surrounding ice formations had inspired them. I smirked. The evergreens were a vivid emerald color. The beauty made my chest ache. The pull of power intermingled with my cells, even at this distance.
We soared down to land as we neared and the wind slid over my skin, whipping my hair back into Khaledâs face. It made my adrenaline spike, a rich joy pulsating in my chest.
Nightplume was unhappy with our weight and let it be known by hitting the ground with a rough jolt. I patted her head, remembering the lesson I had learned in the In Between. A gift from The Keeper, to understand animals with such clarity and ease.
Neruth bounced once, not quite catching herself before she fell off the side of Nightplume and tumbled into the trees.
I was next to her in an instant. It happened so fast, I wasnât so sure I had actually moved. Touching her shoulder, I asked, âAre you okay?â
Her eyes were wide and she shifted to a seated position as Khaled appeared to check for any injuries. I smiled at his gentle attentiveness for a moment. When Khaled found nothing wrong, I looked up to find three pairs of eyes on me.
I looked at Reilas first. He appeared frozen in place, the only movement was his fluttering eyelids. Someone coughed and he jerked his head away. He adjusted his gambeson, promptly turned around, and found something else to do.
My eyes trailed his every movement, heavy emotions rising and pooling in my chest. Tell your father Iâm waiting for him, my mother had said.
The image of the whip, dripping with his blood as my grandmother curled her fingers around it.
I saw the horrible things he had done.
And then I remembered the way he looked at me when I had seen him for the first time last year, at the Harvesting Festival. How ready he had been to die rather than hurt me.
âSo, youâre back,â a harsh voice remarked. I met eyes with Sri. Her face was covered in a dark purple cloth, except for her unnervingly black eyes. I could see the intensity build in them as they flicked back and forth between Khaled and I.
âYou are my cousin,â I said simply, and she dropped her arms from their crossed position.
âAt least you finally figured something out,â she spat. âYouââ she started, and I felt the anger hit me like a thick wave of pain. I winced just as Khaled stepped forward. She snapped her mouth shut. A muscle feathered in Khaledâs jaw, casting shadows across his cheeks from the midday light.
I studied the interaction and jealousy blossomed inside of me. There was something dangerous between those two, something that I didnât really understand. Doubt flooded my mind as I watched the way Sri looked at Khaled. Respected him, even.
Torsten had once stood before me, holding her on a brutal leash to protect me during our training sessions.
