* * *

Gavin woke up in the middle of the night, stretched out on the love seat across from the sofa, where Lily was still sleeping, the throw he’d settled half around her tangled underneath her. His legs were hanging over the side of the love seat and there was just no way to get comfortable anymore, so he sat up, thinking he’d just crash on the thick-pile area rug, a pillow under his head.

That kiss. Once again, it had happened so naturally, them both moving toward each other’s lips at the same time, and he’d wanted to kiss her so much that he hadn’t reminded himself that being so attracted, so drawn to Lily Gold on all levels made no sense.

But he was drawn to her. Undeniably.

Was he just feeling very protective of her? That had to be it. He knew she was worried, despite his promise not to make any decisions about the ranch for eight weeks, for her future. Whether she’d have a job to come back to, a home to raise her baby in.

He didn’t know what he’d be doing in eight weeks. Selling. Not selling.

And she’d just opened up to him about her child’s father. He and Lily had been just...feeling close in that moment. That had to have been it.

Getting involved with Lily romantically was something he couldn’t do. He’d never forgive himself if he hurt her. And he was heading in that direction if he kept going for her lips.

I’m not going to be a dad...

The way he saw it, the way he’d always seen it, was that he wouldn’t know the first thing about being a father. He’d never had one. Failing in the most basic of responsibilities was in his genes, his DNA, his blood. If the man who’d helped bring him into the world could turn his back on the mother of his child, on him, then Gavin could do it. Traits were inherited. Gavin couldn’t see ever doing what Harlan had; he couldn’t imagine himself capable of such a terrible thing. But the possibility, because his own father had, had always lurked in the back of his mind. Fatherhood was a big blank for him.

It had cost him relationships over the years. Two girlfriends whom he’d cared for in particular had run for the hills when he’d told them he didn’t want to be a father and wouldn’t change his mind, so if that was a deal breaker... It had been. Then his most recent ex had cheated on him when he’d truly believed they had something really special. He’d stopped dating after that, done with it all. All he could think back then was, What the hell was the point?

Now he couldn’t stop thinking about a woman who was about to have a baby any day. A woman who’d just shared how she’d been left, how awful she’d felt.

He wouldn’t hurt her. Which meant keeping his lips and hands to himself.

“Maz,” Lily said suddenly.

He looked at her, but she was still sleeping.
