It was dinner time, thank God, late May. There were two beautiful women in the kitchen, the cook and her friend. The two of them had been out foraging on the beach for seaweed. Walking along, as I see it, maybe picking up the ribbons in their hands, or on a long stick, and maybe a dog was running around too. We do not, as a rule, eat seaweed where I live, in Wisconsin. But there, in the bucket, were the goods, the gift from the sea. The fact of it, dark green, glittery, made us feel as if we were continuing on in the fairytale of our lives, coming from our Hobbityhuts to see what had been hunted and gathered, the freshness of the island being offered up. We sat down and ate, and were fortified.
