Chapter thirteen

Demons

Javier

“So… what do you guys think?” I glanced nervously around the tiny back lounge of our tour bus. We had finished practicing our new song, and I was ready to be done for the evening. The sweat from cramming five bodies into such a small space was competing with the new leather smell of the sofas and the lingering aroma of food from having eaten at the MSG.

“It needs work, but we can improve it during the sound check.” Kasani sat back and stretched his arms and conducted a few complicated hand exercises to keep his wrists from hurting after two hours of messing around on the keyboard trying to perfect our new song.

“Not about the music.” I tsked. “About Lillianna. Do you think I’m jumping in too fast?”

“You’ve been talking for almost five years.” Hayley was performing similar hand exercises. She had rested her practice sticks on top of her drum pads. “I’m honestly surprised it’s taken you this long.”

“Look who’s talking,” I teased her. “When are you going to seal the deal with our favorite videographer?”

“Wyatt and I are just friends,” she said defensively. “I don’t want to mess up the relationship we have in order to risk something more.”

“I think Lillianna has some demons to work through,” Jag interjected, returning to my question. He was in the process of packing his practice guitar into its case alongside Roman’s. They tag teamed during song writing even though Roman took over lead during performances. Jag supported him with his rhythm guitar.

“She’s had a tough life,” I acknowledged. “Way worse than I realized. You all got a hint of that last night during her breakdown.”

“Yeah, what was that all about?” Roman asked. “Has she been abused or something?”

“Her own father was trying to sell her into sex slavery.” Oops, I hoped I wasn’t betraying her trust in sharing that with my band mates. “She suspected the people she worked for were a cartel and running a human trafficking ring.”

There was a chorus of swear words, whistles, groans, and growls as they all reacted to that information.

“Did she ever tell you where she’s from?” Jag asked. He probably knew more about Lillianna than the rest of the band simply from our close friendship.

“Her family lived in a homeless encampment near Mexico City and escaped into the US with barely the clothes on their backs.” I turned to Roman. “Speaking of clothes, will you ask Kaelyn if she’ll take Lillianna shopping tomorrow? I’ll give her some money.”

“Sure.” Roman pulled out his phone and sent a quick text. “I’m sure Kaelyn will be more than willing. She knows how much stuff is required to be on tour with a rock band.”

“I hadn’t even thought of that when I agreed to let her come with us. She only has a couple of outfits.”

“And her backpack looks as if she carried it across a desert,” Kasani said.

“She probably did. Her father wouldn’t let her have much money even though she worked hard. Hey, did
