Hanna and his team wait

Shiherlis uses the drill

That image of McCauley in negative on the monitor makes him a ghost, the counterpart to Hanna’s earlier resemblance to a night creature. Surveillance brings them together, as if it’s only the sensitivities of special equipment that can spot these special people. But surveillance is also the way Mann sets up a series of teases heightening Hanna and McCauley’s interest in one another, leading up to the famous coffeehouse confrontation that was both the origin of the film and its major selling point.

One of the most nicely observed of Heat’s scenes comes next. McCauley and his crew gather together in a deserted spot to decide what to do now they know they’re being watched. You can see that the younger actors revere De Niro and are happy to play it quiet and pay attention. McCauley seems to have become fatalistically calm, his chin pressing inwards to his chest with caution. He tells them, ‘Our problem is, take the bank or split right now – do not go home, do not pack, nuthin’. Thirty seconds from now we are gone on our separate ways, that’s it.’ He looks at Shiherlis, grim with tension, who says, ‘The bank is worth the risk. I need it brother.’ When a nervous Michael Cheritto seeks assurances, McCauley tells him. ‘I got plans, I’m going away after this, so for me maybe the reward is worth the stretch.’ He reminds Cheritto about his family and all the money he’s got stashed away, ‘If I were you I would be smart, I would stay clear of this.’ But Cheritto gives his answer, ‘Well, for me, you know, the action is the juice.’ They’re all in.
