He saw the boy before he got to the entrance to 825 Gerard, in an alley behind the building, throwing to one of those old-fashioned pitchbacks. Gibbs stood across the street, watched that beautiful motion he saw from the boy in games, the high kick, that perfect arm angle of his, the ball coming straight over the top.

Like Koufax, his all-time hero.

Not many people remembered Sandy Koufax anymore. Maybe it was because Gibbs’s dad had been an old Brooklyn Dodger fan, one of the few who still rooted for them after they left for Los Angeles. They would watch Koufax when Tony was little and his father would always remind him that Koufax had started in Brooklyn as a kid.

Now he watched this Little League boy who he believed had some Koufax in him, the boy lost in what he was doing, taking it seriously, then throwing another one with all his might that hit the net in a place that sent the ball right back to him like it was on a string.

Gibbs thought: This is better than anything I’m going to watch today with the Yankees and Devil Rays.

This kid is the real deal.

A car horn finally distracted Michael Arroyo and he threw one too high, and the ball came flying back over his head, right through the entrance to the small alley and across the street to where Gibbs was standing.

When Michael turned around, there he was.

“Michael, I’d like to ask you a question,” Tony Gibbs said, picking up the ball, tossing it back with a little zip on it. “Where’s your father, really?”
