A Father and His Sons

Joseph Beckworth hunched forward and pulled his jacket up around his ears as he made his way through the parking lot to find his car. It was colder than normal that day, and the wind cut right through the thin lining of his jacket. How odd it felt to have such a cold, windy day in September.

It had been a great day at the office. The engineering firm he worked for had taken on a new project that was both exciting and challenging. The team he headed had solved one of the most pressing issues in the project, and now they were ready to move into phase two.

Despite the bad weather and the long workday, Joseph felt particularly energetic. Maybe it was because the big fight was just around the corner. There were only two more days until he would be off to the airport to meet up with his four sons in Las Vegas. They had been looking forward to the Felix Trinidad/Oscar De La Hoya fight since the moment it was officially announced.

Ever since his boys were young, boxing matches were a sacred tradition. Their mom hated boxing and decided that instead of fighting the barbarian instincts of her husband and sons she would take advantage of some much deserved time off and spend an evening with her girlfriends.

Even with their sons grown the tradition continued. They would all fly from their separate locations and either meet to see the fight live or rent rooms at a resort that brought in the fight on a large-screen TV. This particular fight was special. This fight was worth traveling to the Mandalay Bay Casino Hotel, and they had been lucky enough to score five tickets in the fourth row! What a night it would be!

On the long drive home, Joseph began to think back over some of his favorite fights—well, not the fights so much as the unforgettable experiences he shared with his sons: There was the time when the boys were teenagers and Jeremy had been explaining the technique behind a left hook and accidently gave Justin a beautiful shiner. Then there was the time that Justin was so excited that as he swung his arms around in exclamation he actually knocked himself off of his chair.

He laughed as he remembered the match in which Tyson was going for the WBC title and every couple of minutes he thought he’d heard the microwave beep. He had gotten up a couple of times to check, but there was no food in the oven. The third time he heard the beep and got up again to check, one of his sons blurted out, “Dad, what’s going on, are you okay?”

“I’m just trying to figure out what that ringing is.” All of the boys looked around with a puzzled look on their faces. One of them asked, “What ringing sound?”

“It sounds like something in the kitchen, maybe a timer or an alarm clock. Haven’t you guys heard it?” They were all sure that they hadn’t heard anything unusual.
