EAT GREENS FOR CALCIUM

Right after people ask me, “Where do you get your protein,” they demand, “Well, where do you get your calcium?”

Before I was heathy, drinking milk was part of my every day. I just knew I had to build a strong body, and a strong body meant strong bones, and that in turn meant that I had to drink almost a quart of milk a day. Milk is the best source of calcium, right? That’s what everyone has said for years. When you grow up in the inner city, your food choices are limited, and you get almost no education about nutrition, which means that television ads become the major source of information. We all wanted that famous white mustache to show that we got our milk and calcium.

It’s hard to understand what an enormous impact TV has on our health and our food choices. We see countless commercials about how tasty meat is, how healthy milk is, how excellent eggs are—these messages inform and overwhelm us because we see no information from the other side, from the healthy side. When was the last time you saw a commercial that said collard greens are an excellent source of calcium? Big Broccoli doesn’t have the same high-powered lobbyists as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

When I talk to mothers with young kids, they’ll say they’ve been working to get chocolate milk out of schools because of the sweetness, yet they embrace standard milk; they don’t realize how much sugar is in regular milk or how harmful it is for growing boys and girls. Likewise, the seniors I meet with each week tell me that they always drink milk; their doctors told them it’s a great way to get calcium and fight osteoporosis.

What we’ve learned about calcium over the years falls into the category of things that we must unlearn. Back when you were growing up, you may have had one or two friends who were lactose intolerant. You probably thought something was wrong with them. But did you know that approximately 65 percent of the human population is lactose intolerant? That means most of us are eating and drinking dairy and putting up with all that bloating, cramping, gas, and diarrhea because we assume it’s normal. We’re so used to pain that we forget how often we experience it.

Recent studies have also indicated that the proteins in milk may also damage the production of insulin in people who are at a high risk of diabetes and that there may well be a link between milk and prostate cancer. You may be surprised to learn that countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis also have the highest consumption of dairy products.

Instead of drinking milk, try these excellent sources of calcium: bananas, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, lentils, tahini, figs, almonds, and tofu. In fact, collard greens are one of the best sources of calcium around. And, it’s a healthy source.
