Finding a College That Fits Your Personality
Before looking at the details of good schools for each profession, it will behoove you to take some time to consider what type of school will be best for you. Answering questions like the ones that follow can help you narrow your search and focus on a smaller set of choices. Write your answers to these questions down somewhere where you can refer to them often, such as in your notes app on your phone.
⢠Size: Does the size of the school matter to you? Colleges and universities range in size from five hundred or fewer students to twenty-five thousand students.
⢠Community location: Would you prefer to be in a rural area, a small town, a suburban area, or a large city? How important is the location of the school in the larger world?
⢠Distance from home: How far away from homeâin terms of hours or miles awayâdo you want/are you willing to go?
⢠Housing options: What kind of housing would you prefer? Dorms, off-campus apartments, and private homes are all common options.
⢠Student body: How would you like the student body to look? Think about coed versus all-male and all-female settings, as well as ethnic diversity, how many students are part-time versus full-time, and the percentage of commuter students.
⢠Academic environment: Which majors are offered, and at which degree levels? Research the student-faculty ratio. Are the classes taught often by actual professors or more often by the teaching assistants? How many internships does the school typically provide to students? Are independent study or study abroad programs available in your area of interest?
⢠Financial aid availability/cost: Does the school provide ample opportunities for scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and the like? Does cost play a role in your options? (For most people, it does.)
⢠Support services: How strong are the schoolâs academic and career placement counseling services?
⢠Social activities and athletics: Does the school offer clubs that you are interested in? Which sports are offered? Are scholarships available?
⢠Specialty programs: Does the school offer honors programs or programs for veterans or students with disabilities or special needs?
Not all of these questions are going to be important to you, and thatâs fine. Be sure to make note of aspects that donât matter as much to you. You might change your mind as you visit colleges, but itâs important to make note of where you are to begin with.
