Trent

After Lana falls asleep, I message the guys to get back to the house immediately. I fond myself back in the kitchen, staring at the small package.

It has no return address. There is absolutely no way of knowing who it’s from without opening it and I can’t invade her privacy like that.

Don’t get me wrong. The cop in me is shaking with unchecked anger at the fact that we’ve come to this already.

He’s watching. It has to be from him, which means he knows where she is. That just pisses me off, even though I knew it would eventually come to this.

I had hoped it wouldn’t, but I’ve been working this job long enough to know the way sick abusive fucks like him think. Especially when they choose to lay claim to something or someone.

By the time the guys get back to the house, I’m still sitting in the kitchen having what feels like a staring contest with this fucking box.

“Trent?” I hear Carl holler and I groan. I swear to fuck, if they wake her up, I’m going to kick their asses.

I get up to meet them before they can scream anymore. “Shh! She’s sleeping and if my suspicions are correct, she’s going to fucking need it, so be quiet,” I growl.

They all narrow their eyes at me but don’t say anything else.

I toss my head in the direction of the kitchen and then go back to the box, knowing they will follow behind me.

“Alright, you got us here, now tell us what the fuck is so important we had to drop everything,” Joe demands as they all sit around the table with me, and I sigh.

“This came for Lana today.” I look between them and I can see they don’t understand, so I continue. “There is no return address or mailing label. And she didn’t order anything.”

Everyone goes silent as my words sink in before they start cursing under their breath and stare at the box like it’s going to genuinely explode.

I thought that for a moment too, but I know he won’t kill her that easily. He’s going to play with her first.

“It’s from him?” Dameon growls, the darkness in his eyes telling how pissed off he is.

“I think so. She says she didn’t order anything. I did, but it was all in my name.”

“She didn’t open it?” Joe asks me.

“No. She wanted to, but she was in Little space. I was able to redirect her to open a package of mine. They were all gifts for her anyway.” I take another breath. “She seemed to forget about it by the time she was finished with the box I gave her.”

Carl gives me an assessing look, and I try not to give anything away.

He’s known me the longest, and if anyone can figure out that Lana and I are in a relationship, it’s going to be him.

“One package distracted her?” he questions.

“I think so. She was already really tired, but she suckered me into letting her open one thing before her nap.
