Chapter 15
Allison
Iâm where the magic happens.
Baxâs home studio vibrates with the kind of buzz that only comes from supercharged, unfiltered creativity. The small building is a sanctuary of sound, nestled comfortably on a lush Hollywood Hills property with gorgeous modern architecture. I lean against the wall, observing as alchemy unfurls right in front of me.
Baxâs fingers dance along the frets of his guitar. Marcus nods along at the soundboard. And then thereâs ZZ Andrews, her big curly red hair an exclamation mark in the room, belting out a chorus that could raise the deadâor at least get them tapping their toes. Sheâs new to me, a collaborator of Baxâs with a big laugh and a killer set of pipes.
âTry that bridge again,â Bax directs, eyes focused, the blue of them looking almost ultraviolet under the studio lights. âBut ease into it, like itâs a secret weâre not sure we wanna share.â
âGot it,â ZZ purrs.
Does she? Because Iâd have no idea what to do with that direction, but I guess thereâs a whole different language to learn when it comes to making music with Bax. ZZ throws a glance my way, and I give her an appreciative nod. The womanâs got talent.
âLike this?â ZZâs fingers dance across the bass strings, making it look easy.
âExactly!â Baxâs dark hair falls into his eyes as he hops forward. âThatâs the soul Iâm looking for.â
Baxâs strong work ethic is unmistakable, and his camaraderie with Marcus and ZZ is palpable. Theyâre more than a team; theyâre a band of sonic marauders, looting silence and filling it with sound.
âTake five?â Marcus suggests, peeling off his headphones.
âBreak time it is,â Bax confirms. He saunters over to where Iâm perched on the leather couch. âSo, whatâs the verdict, Kirby?â
âMe? Iâm just here for the free show.â I keep my tone light, teasing, but Iâm all kinds of impressed. âSeriously, itâs⦠good. Really good. Like, I feel like a dummy for only being able to say âgood,â because itâs beyond good.â
âHigh praise from the queen of tough love herself.â Bax grins.
As we all step out into the afternoon sun, Marcus elbows Bax. âHey, man, how about some of those legendary sandwiches?â
âOnly if you promise not to eat them all this time,â Bax shoots back.
âYour cooking skills are the only reason we keep you around, Bax,â ZZ jokes.
We spill out from the studio and into Baxâs main house. His homeâs as welcoming as the man himselfâfull of life, scattered with memorabilia.
Thatâs when Melanie, Baxâs sister, shows up. Her dark hair mirrors Baxâs, but thereâs a fire in her blue eyes thatâs all her ownâa Davis trait, no doubt. And sheâs seemingly come here just to tease her brother about daring to think heâs cool enough to hang with ZZ Andrews.
Nothing like a younger sibling to keep your ego in check.
âMelanie, this is Allison,â Bax introduces. âSheâs the one brave enough to write my biography.â
âAh, the famous Allison Kirby.â Melanie grins and grabs me in a huge hug. âI freakinâ loved âToxic Love Diaries,â by the way.
