Chapter 15

Allison

I’m where the magic happens.

Bax’s home studio vibrates with the kind of buzz that only comes from supercharged, unfiltered creativity. The small building is a sanctuary of sound, nestled comfortably on a lush Hollywood Hills property with gorgeous modern architecture. I lean against the wall, observing as alchemy unfurls right in front of me.

Bax’s fingers dance along the frets of his guitar. Marcus nods along at the soundboard. And then there’s ZZ Andrews, her big curly red hair an exclamation mark in the room, belting out a chorus that could raise the dead—or at least get them tapping their toes. She’s new to me, a collaborator of Bax’s with a big laugh and a killer set of pipes.

“Try that bridge again,” Bax directs, eyes focused, the blue of them looking almost ultraviolet under the studio lights. “But ease into it, like it’s a secret we’re not sure we wanna share.”

“Got it,” ZZ purrs.

Does she? Because I’d have no idea what to do with that direction, but I guess there’s a whole different language to learn when it comes to making music with Bax. ZZ throws a glance my way, and I give her an appreciative nod. The woman’s got talent.

“Like this?” ZZ’s fingers dance across the bass strings, making it look easy.

“Exactly!” Bax’s dark hair falls into his eyes as he hops forward. “That’s the soul I’m looking for.”

Bax’s strong work ethic is unmistakable, and his camaraderie with Marcus and ZZ is palpable. They’re more than a team; they’re a band of sonic marauders, looting silence and filling it with sound.

“Take five?” Marcus suggests, peeling off his headphones.

“Break time it is,” Bax confirms. He saunters over to where I’m perched on the leather couch. “So, what’s the verdict, Kirby?”

“Me? I’m just here for the free show.” I keep my tone light, teasing, but I’m all kinds of impressed. “Seriously, it’s… good. Really good. Like, I feel like a dummy for only being able to say ‘good,’ because it’s beyond good.”

“High praise from the queen of tough love herself.” Bax grins.

As we all step out into the afternoon sun, Marcus elbows Bax. “Hey, man, how about some of those legendary sandwiches?”

“Only if you promise not to eat them all this time,” Bax shoots back.

“Your cooking skills are the only reason we keep you around, Bax,” ZZ jokes.

We spill out from the studio and into Bax’s main house. His home’s as welcoming as the man himself—full of life, scattered with memorabilia.

That’s when Melanie, Bax’s sister, shows up. Her dark hair mirrors Bax’s, but there’s a fire in her blue eyes that’s all her own—a Davis trait, no doubt. And she’s seemingly come here just to tease her brother about daring to think he’s cool enough to hang with ZZ Andrews.

Nothing like a younger sibling to keep your ego in check.

“Melanie, this is Allison,” Bax introduces. “She’s the one brave enough to write my biography.”

“Ah, the famous Allison Kirby.” Melanie grins and grabs me in a huge hug. “I freakin’ loved ‘Toxic Love Diaries,’ by the way.
