MALIK KNELT IN THE rear tray of a Toyota Hilux utility with two others from the Guardian Angels. One, a young man sporting a Mohawk and bolt action rifle, the other an older woman clutching an Indonesian assault rifle. He couldn’t remember their names, but if shit became real, he was sticking with the female. He could see the young man was inexperienced and scared.

The Toyota was parked down a side street, facing the ocean.

“Yo!” Malik called to Mohawk, knelt staring over the roof of the vehicle’s cabin.

The boy looked around at him.

“It’s going to be okay, man, just chill, alright?” Malik spoke in a reassuring voice. “Chill.”

The young man nodded and turned away, although the worried look never left his eyes.

Little fucker’s going to get someone killed.

“It’s Sammy’s first day out for real, isn’t it Sammy?” the woman shuffled over to pat the young man on the shoulder.

He nodded.

“Well, just chill, man. Nothing to worry about, just concentrate on your job and fall back on your training and rehearsals.”

“Training?” Sammy asked. “What training?”

Malik looked at the woman. She shrugged. “We don’t have much time to train the newbies. Their training is usually on the job, so to speak.” She chuckled, showing a missing tooth.

Malik struggled not to roll his eyes. For real? This is worse than I thought.

“You ever shot a rifle?” Malik nodded at the weapon clutched in Sammy’s hands.

“Never.”

Malik closed his eyes and grimaced. “So that thing isn’t zeroed, huh?”

“Zeroed? What does that mean?”

“You want this boy to die?” Malik asked softly, watching the woman.

The woman stopped grinning. “Now listen here, yank, no one’s dying today.”

“And just how do you know that? Anything can happen in a fight.”

“We’ll take care of him. Won’t we, Sammy?” She patted the young man again.

She stopped and shot an angry glare at Malik. “Anyway, what do you know?”

“I’ve seen my fair share of fights. I know what to expect, am well trained, and unless something goes very wrong today, I know I’ll be walking away from this. Can you say the same?”

She swallowed and looked away. “I’ve seen my fair share of combat, too, Malik.”

Well, shit! She remembered my name!

“After all, Australia was invaded.” She looked back at him. “Remember?”

“How could I forget?”

“So you were here from the beginning?”

Malik nodded, and over the next half an hour, explained what his new bride and he had been through since the arrival of the Indonesians.

“Wow!” Sammy piped up. “That’s some story!”

“It isn’t a story.” The woman’s voice was soft, but berated him all the same. “I’m sorry to hear of your wife’s suffering, Malik,” she added.

“Not your fault.” He shrugged.

“Still.” She moved over to him and laid a hand upon his shoulder. “I’m sorry all the same. It’s terrible what she has been through. Let’s make these fuckers pay.”

Malik smiled and nodded. “That sounds like a plan.”

I’m beginning to like this woman. She’s tougher than an old boot.

“I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten your name already. I’m terrible with names. Got a photographic memory for a face.
