Chapter Ten

Xavier walked up to the gazebo. Just two months ago they’d decorated it for Dylan and Maggie’s wedding. The decorations hadn’t come down because Fran and Eva had used this spot next for their vows. Followed by Reed and Sarai. The decorations had gotten an Indian-Southern Baptist makeover when Sean and Ruhi had taken center stage a couple of weeks ago.

The only addition Xavier made for his nuptials with Cassie was to add a record player and speakers at the back of the gazebo.

“Never thought I’d see you standing here,” said Dylan.

“Never thought I’d get her back,” he said.

But he had gotten her back. Physically, if not spiritually. Xavier knew Cassie still didn’t trust him. But after they said their vows, he’d have a lifetime to prove to her that he would never leave her again. He’d make her see that he’d meant every one of the vows he’d promised her four years ago. And now he had new ones to tack on that he’d hold fast to every day of their lives.

In the distance, he saw the girls begin their promenade toward them. He made out Cassie immediately. Not simply because she was dressed in white. Because she was a beacon. He’d always find her.

As his gaze focused in on her, he was transported back to that moment five years ago when he’d seen her walking down the street. The sun had lighted on her shoulders, surrounding her with an angelic glow that warmed him from afar. He’d followed her then. She was coming to him now.

Back then, she’d turned to him with a small smile on her face. Now, she gazed up at him with a blank expression. Her features were set not in joy but in duty.

He knew that the main reason she’d agreed to this arrangement was for Alex. Her sense of duty to their child overruled her lack of feelings for him. Her distrust of him because she still believed that he’d abandoned her, misled her, and never came back for her.

Xavier cursed himself for not looking harder for her. For simply taking the word of her parents and not pressing to find out for himself if she had married someone else. To at least seek her out and have a conversation with her to ensure that he wasn’t her choice.

He would never doubt again. He would never have to. In just a few minutes, she would be his forever.

Fran placed the needle on the record, and the crooning sounds of Evangeline Taylor filled the early afternoon air. It was the song playing on their many drives through the countryside. The song playing the night he’d promised her forever. It was a gamble to play it now, but the words the singer crooned were as true today as they were all those years ago. The love he had for Cassie was eternal.

From the distance, Xavier saw the light of recognition in Cassie’s eyes. Cassie’s steps faltered. Luckily, the other women were there by her side.
