CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

“I think I might have lost my appetite.” I sigh, sitting down on a wet bench and burying my face in my hands. “I wish we knew for sure if Gaia was with Craig! Because if she was, why haven’t we found her yet? And if it was her in the truck while he was picking up the pizza, why did he not want anyone seeing her? That sounds shady.”

“He’s gotta talk,” Bode says. “He can’t stay silent forever.”

“What if he does?” I groan. “Maybe the Ghost of Mavis will come and finish him off!”

“Come on,” Bode offers me a hand, and I find myself taking it and allowing him to haul me up. “Pizza makes everything better.” He glances at me guiltily. “Sorry, that was dumb. Almost everything.”

“It’s okay, I know what you mean.”

We trudge back along past the bar and through to the parking lot.

“Hey—better idea—follow me!” Bode says, taking off back to the walkway in the direction of the gondola building. There’s a single light on the steps and I follow him up to a platform where a glass gondola pod is parked, waiting to go up the mountain. Bode grasps a lever and, with a flourish, opens the door for me. “After you.” The pod moves ever so slightly as I step into it and sit down a little too quickly on the seat facing up mountain. Bode sits opposite. “Kinda dark, but warmer than sitting out.”

“Not a bad view from where I’m sitting.” I mean the mountain, but it sounds like I’m hitting on Bode. I rub my face, embarrassed. He laughs, flips open the lid of the pizza box, and offers it to me. I take a slice; hot and good, nothing so comforting. We wolf through the first couple of slices fast, in silence, both of us focused on the food and nothing else. I like that I can be quiet with him. I wonder if I’m the first girl he’s taken to his “pod”; he knew it would be open. I decide not to think about that too much and scoff more pizza.

“What do I owe you?” he says, after a while.

“For the pizza? Nothing. Definitely on me.”

“Big spender. I knew you pawned that fancy watch.” He grins at me in the gloom.

“Oh my god, I totally forgot to tell you!” I say. “Addy’s got it.”

“Yeah? How come?”

“I showed it to her, told her we found it in Craig’s truck.” I stare at the pizza box a minute, unsure of how to go on. “The watch is genuine.”

“Okay…” Bode says. “She’s sure.”

“Very.”

“What’s going on, Es?”

“So…” I take a breath. “Addy knows the watch is real because it’s her mum’s.”

Bode sits up with a start and the pod rocks a little. “No way. What was Addy’s mom doing in Craig’s truck?”

I twist my lip, holding his gaze.

“Oh,” Bode says quietly. “She wasn’t in Craig’s truck. Gaia was.”

I nod.

“Addy thinks your sister stole the watch?”

“Gaia admitted it. Addy found it in her stuff, confronted her.
