Chapter Twelve
Karla enjoyed the ride until Sawyer pulled to a stop in front of her house and her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and her heart sank.
âYikes, is it Rob again?â Sawyer killed the engine.
She almost wished it were. The school never called unless there was an issue. She held her breath and took the call. âHello?â
âMrs. Maples?â A nasal voice rang in her ear.
âYes?â
âThis is Mrs. Johnson at Driftwood Bay High School, Your son was caught smoking in the bathroom. He is currently away from the other students in the media center office. He will be attending in-school suspension for the following week.â
Smoking. Just as Channyon had said. âHow could he smoke in the school?â
Mrs. Johnsonâs voice turned condescending and almost accusing. âWell, those little devices are pretty easy to hide. I could ask how he smokes at home?â
âHe hasnât!â At least, not that sheâd known about. Channyon had smelled it and known right away. There had been that odor in his room. Coming to his defense would only make her look like she condoned the behavior. Karla sighed. âIf he was caught, Iâm sure he earned the ISS. Iâll talk to him more when he gets home.â
The woman made a slight noise that sounded like an accentuated smirk. âBecause of his suspension, heâs not allowed to walk home, nor leave the building unattended. Youâll need to wait in the pickup line until a teacher walks him out to your car.â
Great. Heâll be in a wonderful mood after they paraded him in front of everyone as an example. âIâll be watching for him.â
She hung up the phone and sat still in Sawyerâs truck, needing a minute to process all sheâd just heard.
âSmoking, huh?â Sawyer took a deep breath. âThatâs a tough one to break if heâs already formed a habit.â
âYou heard?â She hadnât thought the woman was that loud, but it was a small cab. âThereâs only one place he couldâve acquired that habit.â One place where her children werenât watched because the man in charge was too busy with his girlfriend.
âRobâs,â Sawyer filled in where she hadnât. âWhat will you do?â
At least he hadnât immediately offered to call Rob and fix it, though maybe for once sheâd have taken him up on it. âI donât know. I need to think about this. If I call and accuse him of letting Davin smoke, before I even talk to Davin, then Iâm probably walking into a trap. He would say I let him do it to get Rob in trouble with the court.â
Sawyer nodded his agreement. âTalking to Davin would be a good place to start. And maybe Maisy too. She may have noticed odd behavior that she couldnât explain but didnât want to say anything.â
Karla added that to her mental list of necessary things to do because of that call. The day had turned from horrible to great then back to horrible again. If Davin was addicted to cigarettes, getting him off of them would take time and effort.
