During the next few hours, they drive for miles in silence. From the rear seat Klaus stares out of the window. In the slanting late afternoon light the cliffs in the distance seem like fortifications of some ancient civilization. He hears Donald tell Linda that he thinks she should have turned off this road earlier, but she says she knows what she is doing. A half-hour later, she changes her mind, and makes a sharp U-turn, spinning the back wheels on the shoulder. By the time they have retraced their route and turned off to an even more narrow road, the sky has darkened. The clouds are threatening but no rain falls.

“Maybe we ought to get back to Los Alamos,” Donald says.

“No, we can’t go back, now that we’ve gotten this far. It’s just a little further,” she insists.
