CHAPTER 19

SEAN

Alone.

At last, some time to myself. I rinse off as quickly as I can and put on a fresh costume. Ah yes, I forgot to mention these people outfitted us with new costumes and gear. I suppose it makes sense that Frank Douglas wouldn’t want me heading out to fight for the government in the orange jumpsuit I’ve worn in the Trench for all these years.

There’s a fancy helmet. I slip it on and it emits a high-pitched screeching. I squeeze my ears shut, but it dissipates quickly. I give myself a once over in the mirror. The visor covers my whole face. It’s less a visor and more a form-fitted segment of glass that I hope is stronger than it looks. A little loading symbol flashes in the corner of my visor and in a sudden burst of color, the HUD lights up with all kinds of information about my surroundings. What a distraction. I search for an “off” button but can find nothing. Instead, I remove the helmet altogether, deciding between the potential for another squeal and the vision impedance, I’d be better off without it. I haven’t needed a helmet so far, so why start now?

Leaving my assigned quarters, I make my way toward Conference Room C. I’m not sure what I expected from a room designed for a conference, but it’s small. I thought we’d be meeting with all the supers who were present in the facility, but to my surprise, it’s just my team.

Rockhard looks like he’s completely recovered. He sits with his arms crossed over his barrel of a chest, slumped back in his chair. He looks embarrassed, and for about a second, I feel sorry for him. But then Whisper slinks up next to me and our elbows and hips touch. I take a side step to place a buffer between us and she scoffs, then moves to her seat and plops down.

Jaguar sits in silence, looking none the worse for wear despite the fact that he died no less than an hour ago.

Franklin Douglas III enters through the door on the other side of the room and steps up to a podium. How many times are we going to go through this?

“Sean.” He nods. “Team.” Nodding again. “Things have escalated a bit faster than we’d expected. Luckily, your plane is only twenty minutes out.”

“What’s going on?” I ask.

He sighs heavily and looks me in the eye. “It turns out, you might have been right.”

I fight back a smug look but can’t help myself. “That surprises you? What was I right about this time? I’ve become quite used to never being wrong; it’s hard to guess what you might be referring—”

“The Torturess was last seen in Egypt, as you know,” he cuts me off.

“Did you see her again?” Annihilatrix asks.

“No, but we don’t believe what transpired this morning is a coincidence.”

“Which is?” she says, sitting forward in her seat.

“Turns out, the zombie apocalypse has truly come earlier than expected.” Douglas taps his tablet, and the screen behind him lights up.
