Chapter Thirteen

Wesley missed having his brothers around, but he hadn’t realized how much of a hole was left in his life until they rang the doorbell of his condo on Saturday morning. They’d hugged then drank coffee in Wesley’s kitchen as they went over their plans for the day: to dig up whatever information they could on the DeWalt Manor. After Wesley updated them on what he’d heard when he’d visited the manor with Cierra, his brothers had both insisted on coming to help him dig up more information. They didn’t care about this being for the show. Their excitement over discovering the truth and their love of paranormal investigation fueled their desire.

They agreed that Wesley and Tyrone would meet with the local historian to discuss any stories and legends surrounding the property, while Dion would scour the news records at the library. They would meet up later at the Waffle House to go over what they’d found and eat lunch.

Wesley and Tyrone headed to the county’s museum, which was located in a renovated home built in the nineteenth century. The museum was dedicated to preserving the history of Sunshine Beach and the surrounding area. The home was filled with the original furniture of the family who once lived there, along with artifacts and other items donated to the museum by various influential families from Sunshine Beach.

The historian, Dave, was a slim young white man with brown hair and an eager smile. He wore a yellow button-up shirt with brown pants and had set up a table with tea and cookies along with a stack of books in the back corner of the museum.

“I’m sorry about canceling last week,” Dave said once they were settled. “I forgot there was a group tour planned for that day.”

Wesley shrugged. “It was no problem. I appreciate you taking the time to meet with us.”

Tyrone glanced around the museum. “Other people pulled up when we did. Are you sure you’ll have time today?”

Dave nodded. “Yes, my part-timer is here today. She can manage without me. On a typical weekend we only get a few people coming through.”

Wesley pointed to the stacks of books. “Are these for today?”

Dave’s eyes lit up. “Yes. When you first called me, I wasn’t sure what I’d have to offer. We have a few items from the house in the museum, but the family kept most of their things in the home for display there. But it’s also a good thing I canceled last week, because I was digging around in storage on Wednesday looking for something else when I came across a box of old donations.”

“What kind of donations?” Tyrone asked.

“We get all kinds of stuff. People find things their grandparents had and give it to the museum. Unless we see something of value it goes into storage. This box had books and was donated several years ago. I looked through it and lo and behold, it’s filled with various records. Sales receipts, order forms and even a few household ledgers.
