EPILOGUE

Melissa put her arm around Michael’s waist and leaned in to kiss his cheek. She surveyed the small wedding reception, spreading from their dining room into the living room and den. The addition of Erin’s family and a few of her closest friends crowded things a bit, but she was pleased to accommodate them.

“Well, we did it,” Michael said. “Got all three of our children married off to devoted spouses.”

She snorted a laugh and elbowed him. “Married off? This isn’t Pride and Prejudice, and you’re not Mr. Bennet.”

He rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean.” Nodding toward the living room, where the furniture had been pushed back to create a dance floor, he motioned to the newly wedded couples. “Our children are in love, and all is right with the world.”

Almost all, she thought, but wouldn’t for the world dim Michael’s happiness. Especially not today, her boys’ wedding day. She cut a glance toward Brady, her heart aching for him, knowing how Roy’s imprisonment weighed on him. As hurt and angry as she was over Roy’s betrayal, she ached for the man who had been part of their family for so long. Thankfully, his cooperation with the authorities in building their case against Hugh Carver had helped his lawyer negotiate a plea deal that included a lower-security prison and the possibility of parole down the road. Brady had been named his father’s successor as foreman, and his first duty would be hiring a new hand.

The thought of the new hand brought a pang of grief. Melissa searched the room for Dave, and she found him sitting in the corner of the room talking with Erin’s father. Dave was strong, resilient. His leg would heal, and he’d have a job waiting when he was ready to work again. Losing Helen would be hard to get past, but she’d make sure he didn’t travel that path alone.

“Did I tell you?” Michael said, cutting into her thoughts, “I had a call this morning from the Carver family lawyer.”

Melissa tensed. “Oh?”

He nodded. “Gill, in a classic ‘cover your ass’ move, has asked their attorney to negotiate a settlement with us in return for us not suing his father for the damages he caused our business.”

She turned to face Michael fully, her grip tightening on his arm. “And?”

“And who am I to turn down money when we’re gonna need income from somewhere to get us back on our feet?”

Frowning, she started, “But it’s—”

“I know.” He met her eyes. “Hugh will still face the criminal charges, but signing will prevent us from taking them to civil court.” He sighed. “And, honestly, I just want to put this chapter of our lives behind us. I want to accept the settlement and move forward.” He nodded toward the dance floor where Zane was smiling at his bride, Josh and Kate were sharing a private laugh, and Connor was sharing a three-person dance with Piper and Brady. “I want this day to be the new beginning we all need.
