CHAPTER SEVEN

ELIANA LOOKED AT herself in the floor-length mirror of the hotel room, turning to one side and scrutinising her profile. Her hand lay on her stomach, searching for an indicator of her baby, but everything remained flat and undetected. This wasn’t surprising. She was only at the end of her second month, and most pregnancies didn’t start to show until the second trimester.

By then, she hoped to be back in Belo Horizonte, far away from Diego and that fire in his eyes that she wanted to get lost in.

‘I’m blaming you for this, little one,’ Eliana mumbled at her stomach, even as she felt a prickle of arousal trickle down her spine, settling in her core in an uncomfortable pinch.

Her hormones made this whole friendship endeavour with the incredibly hot Dr Ferrari a lot harder than she wanted it to be. Or at least she used her hormones as a convenient excuse to cling to, because she could hardly believe that she would have been so careless of her own volition. To make out with Diego when they had both agreed to take a step back from the passion sizzling between them.

She let herself fall on the bed with a sigh and grabbed her phone to stare at the screen. She read the message she had typed out to Diego, giving her apologies and telling him that she couldn’t attend the party after all.

That was what a smart person would do. Untangle herself from any more situations that weren’t strictly necessary and keep any and all conversations centred around one of two things: their work or their child.

But the voice urging her to send the message was weak, drowned out by the mounting curiosity inside her. Despite things not going as planned, Eliana had glimpsed a part of Diego that lay beyond the thick wall he hid behind, and from his reaction she knew he rarely let anyone see that part of him—if ever.

Diego had suffered a lot more than he let on, and even more than that he seemed to think that he was damaged beyond repair. She wanted to know more about him—both about his family and his relationship with her late half-brother. He had hinted that they’d had a close relationship...something his grandmother Márcia had confirmed when she’d said that he would have been invited to the barbecue were he still alive.

Would she and Diego be able to get over their electrifying attraction and be the kind of friends they wanted to be? Diego had shown her a different side of himself—one she understood all too well. And even though she knew he was nothing like her father, the comparison kept creeping up into her brain, making her wonder.

Had her mother at some point believed Marco to be committed to raising their child together?

Even if Diego’s commitment was solid, would he really make the time as he’d promised?

Losing her mother even before her own life had begun and being raised by a rotation of employees without ever knowing a loving touch, Eliana wanted more than anything else to be someone’s priority.
