CHAPTER NINE
CLEMMIE HAD STAYED in the garden, talking to Sally about the dog visiting schemes here and at her own hospital, and comparing notes with her. Gil had been busy all afternoon, but that was okay. She had a list of people to see, and this separation was just the result of needing to be in two different places, rather than being terrified about getting too close to Gil.
She was on her way to his office, to share an idea with Gil, when she saw him out in the garden, digging one of the flower beds. Heâd changed into a pair of worn jeans, and Clemmie stopped for a moment at the window to watch him. Many washes had the advantage of softening denim and making it fit very well. When that was combined with physical activity and a great body, what was a girl to do, but stand and stare for a moment?
Just a moment, though. Clemmie walked out into the garden, trying to keep her mind off the great body, because she was going home, and she couldnât take Gil with her.
âYouâre just off?â He straightened when he saw her, driving the spade into the freshly dug earth.
âYes. Iâve an idea I want to run past you first. I see youâve found something else to do.â
Gil chuckled. âThis is recreation.â
âYouâre sure about that? Looks like work to me.â Hard physical work maybe. But Gil was smiling and relaxed.
âWhatâs your idea, then?â Gilâs undivided attention always made her feel good. As if her ideas were worth hearing.
âIâd like to make a memory book, for Jahira and Sarahââ
âJahira and Sarah?â He picked up on her point immediately. Memory books and photographs were one way that families were encouraged to help patients in the unit, but they were usually made for just one person.
âYes, both of them. I was talking to them today and Jahira remembered something that Sarah didnât. They laughed about it, but I could tell that Sarah was a bit puzzled.â
Gil nodded. âForgetting things isnât confined to patients with brain injuries. It can be a different process, though.â
âExactly. The difference between forgetting where you put your car keys and forgetting you even have a car.â Clemmie used the analogy sheâd heard when she was a teenager and the manager of her granâs care home had explained dementia to her. âThat puts a responsibility on the people around a patient with a brain injury. Theyâre a repository for their memories, but all memory is subjective.â
âYou mean that Sarah can tell Jahira the facts, but she might leave things out that were important to Jahira, and her feelings about those facts will necessarily be slightly different.â He stopped to think for a moment. âAnd youâre talking just about Sarah and Jahira, are you...?â
He was far too perceptive. But then, the whole point of what Clemmie was saying was that memory was a two-way process sometimes.
âNot entirely.â
His face softened. âI donât want to put pressure on you, Clemmie. Whatever you want to tell me about things that happened that I donât remember.
