CHAPTER NINE

STACY DID SLEEP, more exhausted than she thought after the day’s craziness, and when she woke it took her a moment to realize where she was. Through the dim light of the room, she spotted Miguel still asleep across from her, his thumb in his mouth and his bear, Dozer, tucked at his side beneath his cast.

She went to shift slightly from where she was lying on the floor, having pushed the chairs back to the corner to make room to stretch out, and found a warm, heavy weight draped over her waist, pinning her in place. Next came the awareness of the solid warm body pressed behind hers.

Slowly, she turned her head slightly to see Luis asleep behind her, his handsome features relaxed and so open it made her heart ache. He’d called her a good person. He treated her as an equal. He seemed too good to be true.

But is he?

Her hip hurt from staying in one spot too long, and eventually, she had to move. She sat up carefully, trying to avoid waking the two guys in her life, and failed when Miguel stirred then awoke with a start.

“Mommy?” he wailed, reaching for her, his little face scrunched. “I had a bad dream!”

She rushed to him and held him close as Luis jolted up, rumpled and groggy and far too gorgeous than a man had a right to be. Stacy bit back a grin at his obvious disorientation and hugged her son closer, kissing the top of his dark little head. “It’s okay, honey. It was just a dream. You’re okay.”

“What happened?” Luis asked, squinting over at her. “What time is it?”

“It’s...” She checked her watch. “About 2:00 a.m., and your son had a nightmare.”

Following another kiss and a squeeze, she set Miguel away from her and scooted back. He seemed fine now, as he did after most of his bad dreams, forgetting them promptly as new adventures took hold. The little boy climbed out from beneath his covers and itched his arm above his cast.

“I need to potty, Mommy,” Miguel said, rubbing his eyes with his free hand.

“Me, too,” Stacy said, climbing to her feet as well. “And then we need to eat before Mommy needs to work for a bit.”

Luis yawned and stood as well. “The cafeteria is serving cold meals for staff and patients. How about we all freshen up then meet again in the hallway?”

“Sounds good.” Stacy got her son squared away and then herself while Luis headed to the staff locker rooms for a quick shower and shave. By the time they met up again, he looked fresh and alert while she still felt a bit musty without her coffee.

They went into the cafeteria and stood in line with other members of the staff to get food. Everyone was looking a little worse for wear as the hurricane continued to rage on outside. From here, they were a bit insulated from the chaos, but from the conversations she heard around her, things were pretty bad outside.
