CHAPTER TEN

Sierra circled around the edge of the park. “Do you see her anywhere, Trevor?”

Trevor shook his head. “No, but Old Bart is there on his spot on the bench. He sees everything that goes on.”

Sierra wasn’t crazy about getting out of the car and walking through the park. She’d hoped this would be an easy pickup so they could get out of here as fast as possible.

Joseph leaned across the seat and patted her hand. “It’ll be all right.”

She pushed open the door. “Let’s make this quick.”

Old Bart was probably no more than fifty years of age. He’d been a fixture in Scenic View for at least ten years. He wore ragged shorts and his trademark Dallas Cowboys shirt. He had a paper bag filled with seeds that he threw out for the birds.

Sierra watched the white truck she’d noticed earlier pull in along the street by the park. The driver remained behind the wheel. Her heart beat a little faster.

Trevor ran ahead to question Old Bart. Sierra watched as Old Bart shook his head and threw out a handful of seeds to the gathering pigeons. Trevor trotted toward another group of people who sat in a circle while one of them played guitar.

When she looked back at the white truck, the driver was no longer behind the wheel. She glanced around at the people in the park, paying attention to the younger, muscular men. Any one of them could have gotten out of that white truck.

Maybe it was just a coincidence that the truck had followed them to the park. Still, she felt vulnerable out here in the open. Joseph stood close to her, his gaze darting everywhere.

Trevor trotted back toward them. “They said they saw her about twenty minutes ago. She was headed toward Boulder Beach.”

“Where is that?” Joseph continued to survey the park for threats.

Sierra turned and pointed. “It’s across the street bordering the lake.”

Joseph squeezed her arm. “I’ll get the car turned around and pulled up to the street so we can get out of here as fast as possible.”

She handed him the keys, then she and Trevor crossed the street. They stood at the edge of the road, staring down at an expanse of rocks decreasing in size as they got closer to the shore. There were several clusters of people close to the water’s edge. Some floated or swam out in the water.

She searched for Daisy’s blond head.

“There.” Trevor pointed at a small figure sitting on a flat boulder with a book in her hand. She was some distance from the other people at the far end of the beach.

A man wearing a jacket walked along the beach. He looked at each person there as though searching. It was too warm to be wearing a coat. Was he hiding a gun?

Calling Daisy’s name would only draw attention to her.

“Let’s get down there.” A sense of urgency fueled Sierra’s movements. Trevor had found a very clever way to hide his sister in plain sight, but Sierra did not want to take any chances.
