CHAPTER TEN
âHer cell still goes right to voice mail,â Ian said as he handed Roni back her phone for the tenth time. âSylvie might be in a place with no coverage.â He hoped that was the case. âHow familiar are you with Jaxonâs birth father, Greg?â
Roni looked at Ian from the backseat. âHe grew up here. Why? Did Sylvie tell you about him?â
âI met him.â
âYou met Greg? How? When?â
âThe manâs back in town. He wants custody of Jaxon. Says Sylvieâs unfit. You and I both know thatâs not true.â
âGregâs in Norcastle?â
âHe was as of this morning. If heâs got Jaxon, who knows where they are by now.â
âKidnapping wouldnât get him custody,â Roni said.
âTrue, but feeding lies to the boy to get him to run away wouldnât be kidnapping. He would be able to use it as evidence of Sylvieâs lack of parenting skills.â
âRight.â Roni pressed her lips. âSylvieâs going to need some money. She wonât be able to fight him on her salary. Iâll make sure she has it.â
âThank you.â Ian felt a pang of disappointment, wanting to be the one to help her, but what did it matter where the money came from as long as she had it?
Roni eyed him and he knew she was speculating.
âSheâs a friend, okay?â he said. âI know we just met this week, but sheâs the most genuine person Iâve ever known.â
Roni nodded. âI guess we do agree on something⦠Ian.â
She dropped her gaze to her lap. He knew she wanted to call him Luke, but something held her back. Something he saw, too.
He wasnât the Luke Spencer everyone wanted.
âI think we can also agree on the tasks ahead of us. Find Jaxon and Sylvie. Can we do that?â he asked.
She nodded and looked him in the eyes. Her ice blues matched his own, and for the first time he saw the resemblance. But eye color didnât make them family.
Michael pulled the SUV up to the police station. The four of them jumped out and barged in on Carla talking on the phone.
She took one look at their faces and said to the person on the line, âI gotta go. Somethingâs come up.â She dropped the phone on its cradle and turned to them. âWhy do I get the feeling my shiftâs not over?â
âHave you heard from Sylvie?â Ian asked.
âSure.â Carla smiled up at Ian in a weird way. âDonât give up on her. Sheâs bound to see youâre worth breaking her life of singlehood.â
Ian had no idea what the woman was going on about. âJust tell me when you talked to her.â
âHumph.â The woman moved her mouse to wake the screen up. âPerhaps you donât understand. Iâm on your side, son. You could be really good for our chief.â
âYour chief is good all on her own. Perhaps you shouldnât be giving up on her.â
Carla paused her search on her screen, effectively chastened. âOf course, I just heard someone kissed her and thoughtââ
âWell, donât think. Just tell me when you spoke to her, and then Iâll need you to radio her again.
