CHAPTER TEN

“Her cell still goes right to voice mail,” Ian said as he handed Roni back her phone for the tenth time. “Sylvie might be in a place with no coverage.” He hoped that was the case. “How familiar are you with Jaxon’s birth father, Greg?”

Roni looked at Ian from the backseat. “He grew up here. Why? Did Sylvie tell you about him?”

“I met him.”

“You met Greg? How? When?”

“The man’s back in town. He wants custody of Jaxon. Says Sylvie’s unfit. You and I both know that’s not true.”

“Greg’s in Norcastle?”

“He was as of this morning. If he’s got Jaxon, who knows where they are by now.”

“Kidnapping wouldn’t get him custody,” Roni said.

“True, but feeding lies to the boy to get him to run away wouldn’t be kidnapping. He would be able to use it as evidence of Sylvie’s lack of parenting skills.”

“Right.” Roni pressed her lips. “Sylvie’s going to need some money. She won’t be able to fight him on her salary. I’ll make sure she has it.”

“Thank you.” Ian felt a pang of disappointment, wanting to be the one to help her, but what did it matter where the money came from as long as she had it?

Roni eyed him and he knew she was speculating.

“She’s a friend, okay?” he said. “I know we just met this week, but she’s the most genuine person I’ve ever known.”

Roni nodded. “I guess we do agree on something… Ian.”

She dropped her gaze to her lap. He knew she wanted to call him Luke, but something held her back. Something he saw, too.

He wasn’t the Luke Spencer everyone wanted.

“I think we can also agree on the tasks ahead of us. Find Jaxon and Sylvie. Can we do that?” he asked.

She nodded and looked him in the eyes. Her ice blues matched his own, and for the first time he saw the resemblance. But eye color didn’t make them family.

Michael pulled the SUV up to the police station. The four of them jumped out and barged in on Carla talking on the phone.

She took one look at their faces and said to the person on the line, “I gotta go. Something’s come up.” She dropped the phone on its cradle and turned to them. “Why do I get the feeling my shift’s not over?”

“Have you heard from Sylvie?” Ian asked.

“Sure.” Carla smiled up at Ian in a weird way. “Don’t give up on her. She’s bound to see you’re worth breaking her life of singlehood.”

Ian had no idea what the woman was going on about. “Just tell me when you talked to her.”

“Humph.” The woman moved her mouse to wake the screen up. “Perhaps you don’t understand. I’m on your side, son. You could be really good for our chief.”

“Your chief is good all on her own. Perhaps you shouldn’t be giving up on her.”

Carla paused her search on her screen, effectively chastened. “Of course, I just heard someone kissed her and thought—”

“Well, don’t think. Just tell me when you spoke to her, and then I’ll need you to radio her again.
