CHAPTER NINE

Wade kept one eye on Kit as she mingled with the other ladies Saturday night. Nash and Amy had invited them and some close friends over for a barbecue. The week had passed by quickly. Too quickly. He’d spent most of it harvesting the first cut of hay on the ranch. Cutting, baling, hauling and stacking hay was hot, sweaty, exhausting work. And he’d relished every minute of it. It meant he’d be able to take care of his cattle this winter. Hopefully.

The couple Ray mentioned hadn’t visited JPX Ranch yet, but they also hadn’t visited Dudley Farms. Ray assured him they’d be out soon.

In the meantime, Kit hadn’t mentioned any more cramps and seemed happy spending her days quietly on the ranch. But in the back of his mind, he kept replaying the scene at the shopping center. When she’d doubled over in pain, something inside him had snapped.

He hadn’t had that sensation in years—the fear of permanently losing someone he loved. He’d almost forgotten how sharp it hurt, how helpless it made him feel. He never wanted to experience it again.

“Where are you at?” Nash jabbed an elbow into his side. “I just made fun of your hat and you didn’t even hear me.”

“What’s wrong with my hat?” He took off his straw cowboy hat and inspected it. “Looks good to me.”

“Yeah, if you want to look like a rodeo wannabe.”

“Oh!” Clint and Marshall pointed at him, laughing.

“The only wannabe here is you. You call yourself a barbecue master? The sauce has too much vinegar.” Wade loved ribbing the guys. They’d been doing it nonstop for years. He’d always been able to count on them, but he hadn’t told them about his financial predicament. He wasn’t ready to admit how badly he’d messed up.

“Too much vinegar?” Nash placed his hand against his chest, putting on the wounded show of a lifetime. “Check your taste buds. No one wants candy syrup covering their pork.”

He ignored Nash and turned to Marshall. “You ready for the wedding?”

Marshall grinned. “I’ve been ready since Christmas Eve, when I popped the question.”

“Only one week away, my friend. There’s still time to change your mind.” He slung his arm over Marshall’s shoulders and playfully punched his biceps.

“Why would I do that? Ainsley’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” He gazed at the group of ladies, lifted his can of Coke to the pretty blonde and nodded. Wade’s eyes about popped out of his head. Every woman over there held a baby, including Kit.

“The quadruplets are getting spoiled.” Raleigh, Marshall’s brother-in-law, beamed a proud smile toward the ladies.

“Yeah, they’re growing like weeds. I miss them.” Marshall lived a few hours away from Sweet Dreams. He waved to his sister, Belle, who held one of the quadruplets. She lifted the baby’s hand and pretended to wave back.

“I think Belle needs me.” Raleigh strode away from the men, and Wade watched him take the baby from Belle. The man kissed the boy’s cheek and held him high in the air.
