CHAPTER ELEVEN

He had no business being here.

Wyatt sat with his truck running, staring at the entrance to the long driveway to Marilyn’s parents’ house. It was one of those postcard Colorado homes, rustic and yet scrupulously tidy. Not as big as the compound on Wander Canyon Ranch, but with a generous yard and set in the nicest part of town. While she hadn’t talked about it much, Wyatt got the sense that she saw her parents’ home as confining. He certainly knew a bit about familial homes coming with pressure and expectations.

Still, Maddie and Margie had boasted about the new swing set that had been delivered last week. So did that mean Marilyn and the girls planned to stay here for a while and not look for their own place? Were swing sets portable? He didn’t know. He wasn’t the kind of guy who would know stuff like that. Which is exactly what kept him from turning into the drive.

It was Saturday, the day Marilyn had said she and the girls were coming to the garage. Only they hadn’t appeared, and somehow he knew that meant something. Something good? Something bad? He’d tried to brush it off, busying himself with garage business, but it hadn’t taken his mind off Marilyn, and the crazy worry that wouldn’t leave him.

Marilyn’s car was parked beside the garage, so he could be reasonably sure she was home. If her mom and dad were there, however, this could get a bit prickly. He could only guess they wouldn’t take to the local bad boy showing up unannounced to see their daughter, grown woman or not. They’d fend him off, so showing up unannounced was the only way he’d get to see her. And he needed to see her. Even if only to convince himself she was fine.

What was happening to him? Since when was he willing to waltz into a house of upturned noses just to see if a woman was okay? He tried to tell himself this was about the girls, but that was a joke. It was about them, partly, but it was more about Marilyn. Since the Mountain Vista conversation with Tim—and a fruitless pair of hours trying to wade through the garage paperwork without Marilyn—he’d come to a decision. He was going to look into this dyslexia thing. He’d been waiting to tell her that in person, and still wanted to, only she hadn’t shown.

If you want to tell her, you have to go up to that door, he told himself. So Wyatt called upon his legendary defiant nature, drove up the curving gravel drive and rang Marilyn Sofitel’s doorbell.

Marilyn’s mother came to the door. Katie Ralton’s polite smile barely hid her suspicious expression. “Wyatt,” she said tightly. “We weren’t expecting a visit from you this afternoon.”

Not exactly a warm welcome. Still, he wasn’t going to let this woman make him feel like some teenager late to pick up a date. He applied a charming smile to let the woman know he wasn’t put off by her frosty greeting.
