Chapter Eleven

Julie nuzzled into Luke’s side, where she reminded herself not to get too comfortable. Everything could change in an instant. Not that she needed the fact brought to her attention, especially with Rob a step ahead of them. Even a strong, capable man like Luke might not be able to keep the determined killer away.

“What are you thinking?” Luke kissed her forehead.

“About how much I missed this,” she lied.

“Your eye twitched. You never were a good liar.”

“This is nice. Us talking like this. I missed this.”

“Me, too. You have no idea how much.” His voice was low and had a gravel-like quality. He moved to face her, hauling her body flush with his and smiling a dry crack of a smile—his trademark. Those sharp brown eyes were all glittery with need. “You know what else would be ‘nice’?” He pressed his erection to the inside of her thigh, sending heat to her feminine parts. His breath warmed her neck as he moved to her ear and whispered, “I can’t get enough of you.”

They made love slowly this time, savoring every inch of each other, as if both knew their time together could end in a flash.

A very real threat stalked her, determined as a pit bull.

And she’d learned the hard way there were no guarantees when it came to her and Luke.

He kissed her again before mumbling something about food. He disappeared down the hall, returning a minute later with plates balanced on his arms.

As they ate, he paused long enough to pepper kisses on her forehead, her nose, her chin. She surprised herself by getting a solid meal inside her.

Afterward, she fell into a deep sleep with her arms and legs entwined with Luke’s.

The next morning, Julie blinked her eyes open.

She’d slept a solid eight. The bed was cold in the space Luke had occupied. She glanced around the room. His jeans were gone, but his shirt was crumpled on the floor.

Julie laid her head back on the pillow. The thought of her and Luke back together brought warmth and light into her heart. Would it last?

Clanking noises in the kitchen confirmed his presence in the apartment.

“Luke?”

“Be there in a minute. Don’t move.” He strolled in a moment later wearing jeans and a serious expression, holding two cups of coffee.

“Everything all right?”

“Yeah. Fine.”

But was it? Something was on his mind. He was holding back. If they were going to think about having a relationship, this wouldn’t cut it. She needed coffee to clear her head first. Then she had every intention of confronting Luke. She sat up and took the hot brew. Heaven.

Luke’s cell buzzed before she could properly thank him.

He fished it from his pocket. “What’s up?”

He said a few uh-huhs into the receiver before setting the phone down.

“What was that all about?”

“First things first.” He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her lips.

His breath smelled like a mix of peppermint toothpaste and coffee. Her new favorite combination. “What’s going on?”

“My boss wants me to check out the news.
