Fox’s two-seater Aston Martin Vantage, with its humming growl, attracted attention as they drove through Hatfield, Connecticut. Ru’s first impression of the town was that it was vibey, pretty and sophisticated, judging by the number of art galleries, artisanal delis and bakeries they passed. Affluent, too, she thought. Fox’s stupidly luxurious car was one of many she’d seen since entering the town’s limits.

Fox stopped at a light. Ru followed his gaze to the left and noticed a willowy woman heading toward the coffee shop on the corner. Her red hair glinted with gold in the sunlight, oversize glasses covered her face, and her loose T-shirt and denim shorts couldn’t hide her sleek, subtle curves.

She was stunning, Ru admitted. She couldn’t blame Fox for looking.

Fox seemed to make a last-minute decision and turned right, pulling into the first open parking space he found. When she looked at him, he cut the engine and pushed his sunglasses up into his hair.

“I just saw an old friend walk into the coffee shop, and I’d like to say hello,” he stated, unclipping his seat belt.

Okay, well, he probably didn’t need her cramping his style while he renewed old acquaintances. “I’ll stay here,” she told him, not wanting to be a third wheel.

Fox exited the vehicle and surprised her when he walked around the hood to open her door. “Come and meet my brother’s ex-fiancée,” he told her. “I think you’ll like her.”

Ru grabbed her oversize tote and slung the bag over her shoulder as she straightened her aqua-colored T-shirt. Her white capri pants were a little creased, but that couldn’t be helped. Fox slammed her door shut and placed his hand low on her back and kept it there as they walked toward the coffee shop, its entrance covered by a rounded, bright purple–and–white–striped portico. The main street was lovely, Ru decided, looking around. The shopkeepers seemed to be competing to see whose hanging baskets were the prettiest, who had the shiniest front door, the most attractive window display.

“Was she engaged to Jack?” Ru asked as he pulled open the door to the coffee shop and gestured her inside.

Fox allowed the door to close behind them and shook his head. “No, Malcolm.”

Ru watched as the redhead looked up at him, flashed a smile and then tried to pull it back, as if she wasn’t sure what reaction she’d receive. To both Ru and the other woman’s surprise, Fox pulled the redhead into a gentle, cautious hug. His fondness for her couldn’t be disputed but she didn’t catch anything sexual in their embrace. She got the sense of a man greeting an old friend he hadn’t spoken to for a long time.

Not wanting to intrude, Ru moved down the counter and ordered two iced coffees, Fox’s with an extra shot of espresso. She handed over some money, gave her name and turned when she felt Fox’s hand on her back.

“Ru, meet Peyton. Peyton, this is Ru Osman.”

Ru shook Peyton’s hand, telling her she was happy to meet her.
