NINE

A few hours after sunrise the following morning, dust followed Adeline’s car as Nora drove toward Devil’s Bluffs Ranch after dropping Adeline off downtown. As editor for the local newspaper, Adeline couldn’t help with repairs at the ranch, but Nora could, and she had no intention of sitting around doing nothing instead of helping make sure her best friend had the most magical wedding.

She slowed the car as she rounded a corner and yawned loudly, exhaustion weighing her down to her bones.

Last night, Colter had picked her up from Beau’s a little after ten o’clock at night. She was sore in all the right places from the hours she’d spent with Beau in the hayloft. They’d both been tired and beat, but Beau didn’t want Austin waking up with Nora there, and she respected him for it. Austin knew her as Adeline’s best friend, and Nora wouldn’t mess with that.

The tire hit a bump in the gravel road, but nothing could distract her from the vast beauty of Ward land. Beau didn’t act like he came from money or flaunt it like those in New York City sometimes did, but the Ward wealth wasn’t in possessions but in rich Texas land that was beautiful enough to take Nora’s breath away. Adeline had once said it was easy to forget Beau and Colter came from old money, which had been the reasons they were targeted by the blog as well as their viral photograph, but even last night with Beau’s offer to pay the way for the trip to New York City, Nora still had a hard time wrapping her head around how rich they really were.

The Wards were good people, and she wished the blog had written about that.

As she passed a lake where birds flew overhead, her cell phone beeped, indicating an email had arrived. She didn’t even have to look to know it was from the insurance company with the rental. She’d been on the phone with them for the last hour as she sat behind a desk at the newspaper, while Adeline got to work. A big weight lifted off her shoulders when the insurance company confirmed they were covering the damage to her rental car, and the event would stay a story she could tell others over drinks. Instead of putting her further into debt than she already was.

When the GPS indicated she finally reached the ranch, she slowed the car then headed up the driveway. A cowboy was riding a brown horse, who leaped up and spun in the air, kicking out its legs, looking a moment away from killing the man on his back. “Jesus,” she murmured to herself.

Until that shock turned into fear, as she realized that wasn’t any cowboy. Beau.

Worried now, she parked next to the house and opened the door, quietly stepping out, not wanting to do something to make the horse do anything worse. Not that she knew anything about horses, but she figured making sudden movements was probably not a great idea.
