EIGHT

Angie leaned back in her tub and sank her head under water. She was done with practices for the day and had time for a leisurely soak. But she kept her hands out of the hot water, so they wouldn’t get pruney and desensitize her fingertips.

When most of the bubbles fizzed out and the water turned lukewarm, she unplugged the tub and stepped out of it. She toweled herself off, thinking about her date with Joshua in a couple of hours. A date. She pursed her lips as she cinched the belt of her bathrobe.

Other than their trips to the café before they...well...before, they had never been on a date. They met. They had sex. They talked—they always talked. But that was it. They didn’t go out and do things that real couples did. Like go on dates.

She walked listlessly to her room and fell back on her bed. She shouldn’t read too much into it. It was just a date. It probably had nothing to do with her confession.

The cookies from that night were long gone but her disappointment that he didn’t invite her to stay lingered. She didn’t know what she’d expected to happen after she told him the truth but nothing wasn’t it. Maybe this date meant...something. She flopped onto her stomach and buried her face in her pillow.

He was cryptic about the plan, saying something about a dinner and a concert. She should have asked him what kind of concert it was—the ripped jeans kind or the formal dress kind or something in between. Grabbing her phone from her nightstand, she shot him a quick text.

What’s the dress code for this mystery dinner and concert?

She put her phone back down and sat up in bed. It was time to face the truth. She was no longer content with their arrangement. She wanted more. It was foolish, especially since Joshua didn’t want anything more—he’d made that clear from the beginning—but she couldn’t stop herself from caring about him and wishing that he could come to care about her, too.

That didn’t mean she was willing to do anything about it. Angie sighed and got to her feet. She opened her closet door and stared at her many dresses. Most of them were for performances; they had full skirts with room to cradle her cello between her legs. She could also wear them on the rare occasions that she went to watch someone else play. She sometimes wished she had dresses that hugged her curves—something sexy and flirty. But she couldn’t buy dresses for fun on her budget.

Her intercom rang, which meant that someone was outside. A deliveryman? Odd. She hadn’t ordered anything recently.

“Who is it?” she asked, picking up the receiver.

“I have a package for Angie Han,” a man answered.

Hmm. “Okay. Come on up.”

The box was big—the size of a sheet cake but taller. She thanked the delivery guy and closed the door with her butt, juggling the box in her arms. She plopped it down on the sofa and took off the card attached to it.
