âBig Mick anâ Wee Mickey are working on them new houses behind the Wagon anâ Horses,â Bridie announced as she entered Kittyâs kitchen one Friday morning at the beginning of July.
âThatâs handy,â Kitty replied as she filled a basket with the baps and pies she had baked for the café. âThey should do the weekend, what with customers being few anâ far between,â she said glumly.
âAye, it picked up over Easter but itâs slacked right off again,â Bridie sighed. âIâm just thankful my men have a job to go to even if folks like Bethâs dad gives âem stick whenever he sees âem. Fancy him objectinâ to rat holes being pulled down anâ lovely clean houses put up in their place.â She pulled a face.
âAye, he was giving off stink to me the other day. He says itâll lower the tone of the district, if they move folks out of the slums in the city centre and dump them on us. I soon put him straight, the miserable old so-and-so.â
Bridie laughed. âI bet he didnât like that â but then, he never looks happy even though Bethâs never done running, taking him meals anâ doing his washing.â
âBethâs always felt responsible for him even though he led her a dogâs life afore she married Blair. Heâs a fortunate man is Walter. I told him, times are changinâ an weâve got to accept it,â Kitty said. âThen he started giving off about the Mullers.â
âThey seem all right, even if they are Germans,â said Bridie, picking up the basket ready to leave. âBig Mick says Germanyâs goinâ to cause a lot of trouble in the world if that Adolf Hitler gets his way.â
âAye, John thinks the same. Itâs just one worry after another.â Kitty sighed heavily. âIâll be along later. Not that youâll need me, but I like to show me face to the few customers we still have.â
After Bridie had gone, Kitty stood at the sink, thinking about the Mullers. Molly was down there now, helping Ursula Muller fill in an application form for work in one of the cityâs hospitals, but Kitty had her suspicions that her daughter was more interested in Heinz Muller than his sister. Ah, well. Molly wasnât a child and it was only natural she should be interested in the opposite sex. Sheâd been on a few dates with an ambulance driver but that seemed to have fizzled out and heâd not been mentioned recently. Heinz Muller had. Kitty was aware that Mollyâs kind heart was drawn to someone who needed care, but did she want her daughter to fall in love with a man tied to a wheelchair? She didnât think she did. Hopeful that Heinz was just a passing fancy, she attended to her chores, at the same time mulling over an idea that she had been toying with for some time.
