Candice Tuh scanned the room. She watched their faces. She knew her team well. They were stressed, but coping. She saw something flash across a junior team member’s face. She pounced toward him, “Eric, tell me. What is it?”

He looked up at her, “I’m not sure. Maybe it’s nothing…”

She ran to his terminal. “What is it?”

“Just noticed a glitch in the router feed. A surge, then stabilized.”

“How significant?”

“Not sure…”

She pushed him to the side, pulled another chair across and took control of his terminal. She scrolled through code, “When? Eric, when? What time-stamp?”

She felt him leaning over her shoulder. He shot his hand out. “There! That was it.”

She ignored the odor from his underarm, followed his finger, saw it. Scrolled back then followed chronologically, saw it again. Damn. It was only a line. But the command had led to a surge in data sets before auto-stabilizing the signal. No. No. How?

She pounced from the seat, ran to the wall, hit the emergency hard-wired power-cut button.

The room went black.

She cursed to herself, felt for the button beside the power-cut button, found it, pressed it, then heard the internal alarm signal. They’d been breached.
