Thirty-Seven

Gittinger was watching from his window as the headlights of Laurence Cray’s SUV pierced the darkening gloom on his approach to the illuminated Wittenden Institute gatehouse.

The guards ran a scanner over everyone’s ID and waved the SUV through to the inner security fence. More checks and then the steel electronic gates opened, allowing them in.

Gittinger left his office and knocked on the conference room door. Inside was his CIA contact. The man who was controlling things. He didn’t know the man’s name. He had asked. But all the man said was “You don’t need to know that.” He wore a navy suit, white shirt, a mauve tie, and highly polished black shoes. He exuded a sense of power. Menace.

The man, like Gittinger, had to be fluent in Arabic or else he wouldn’t have been posted to Bahrain. He had alluded to Gittinger’s “cover” job the first time they met. Did he know more about Gittinger’s cover story than he was letting on? Gittinger always assumed he did. He believed the man was well aware that his work at the fake charity had appealed for other reasons. The crop of willing patients he’d cultivated was not just for his carnal desires. The end result was several highly compliant individuals who could also be activated. He had groomed them. And he, and he alone, could unleash them.

Gittinger’s mind flashed back to the unbearable heat of Bahrain. His cover was as the director of a humanitarian charity that helped traumatized youths. He was given a small office in downtown Manama. His work, he claimed, focused on the sons and daughters of those who had been tortured and killed by the regime.

And so began a stint which would reap a rich harvest.

He would compile reports on the damaged youths he interviewed. He used psychotherapy techniques to help them address their fears and anxieties. He talked to them about the intimate details of their lives and how they had been affected after their father or mother or sister or brother was tortured and killed.

Gittinger began to grow attached to several of the girls, all of whom were suffering flashbacks and panic attacks. He came to be trusted by them. Then he began to hypnotize them.

Putting them under his spell, he began to use trigger words and phrases on them.

He loved watching them relax on his “magic couch.” And it wasn’t long before he was indulging himself in anything he wanted to do with them. All while they were under his spell.

The CIA spook was deep in conversation and waved him into the conference room.

“Let me know if they move out of there, you understand?” the man said. He ended the call and leaned back in his seat.

Gittinger pulled up a chair and sat down.

“Bob, that was one of Cray’s guys. They’ve staked out the Marriott. Apparently, that’s where the Feds are. This whole thing looks like it’s going to fuck.”

“I hadn’t envisioned anything like this taking place.”

“Anything like what? ”

“The deaths of Hank White and Father McNamara.
