Chapter 11

Evelyn rolled over in Robert’s bed, propped herself up on the linen sheets on one elbow, then gazed down at the man that she had just completely changed her life with.

It seemed like such a trite cliché to say such a thing, that a few hours in his bed could alter her life, but it had. For she had made a dramatic decision. As had he, and it had set them on an entirely different course than the one they had been on before.

No? Goodness. She was a woman who allowed herself to do wild things. Before, of course, she had done everything that she could to live a grand life within the restrictions that she had.

This last night? She had thrown those restrictions away. There were women she knew who had lived boldly without rules, and, suddenly, she realized she could be one of them and truly be a hoyden indeed.

For, in the past, many a young lady had thrown caution to the wind and joined an entirely different set of people than the ones that she’d been born to.

And that was exactly what she was doing.

She could be so much more than she had thought.

She did not need to be controlled by a father or a brother or a husband or anyone. She could change her life. She could make choices for herself, and she could join the set of people who made the boldest women of history if she so chose. And she did. With that boldness, she could join the discussions of men who might have ruled her out as a good young lady before.

She wasn’t ready to join the bastions of courtesans that advised men of power.

But. . . she was not far afield.

It seemed mad to believe that becoming such a woman would allow her to have influence. But if she chose to be bold and not relegated to the sides of ballrooms? Her life would be so much more . . . vital.

The truth was that if she behaved like a dainty shepherdess, she would be forever herding sheep. No, she needed to dare. To jump and not look back.

A smile tilted her lips.

She gazed down at the man who was jumping with her and helping her on that path.

He blinked and stretched—a fascinating process of rippling muscle and lengthening limbs—before he wrapped his arms around her.

“Now what?” she asked softly.

He lifted his strong hand up and stroked her dark hair back from her cheek.

“Now,” he said, “the adventure, I suppose, truly begins.”

“Has it not already begun?” she teased.

His smile was languid, at ease. “Now we can begin the work that we truly wanted to do together. But first . . . coffee. You have wrung my wits from me,” he said. “I have never experienced anything like it.”

“I am most amazed that I could wring your wits away.” She laughed. “I did not think a man such as you could lose your wits.”

Good humor and contentment danced in his eyes, touched with the first hints of renewed desire.
