CHAPTER 12: THE MARKET, THE MATRON, AND THE MOUNTAIN

A BEAUTIFUL ROLLING mountain sat majestically off in the distance, looking over the valley below. The saltiness of the arid wind should have been an indication that a sea was nearby, but being novice travelers, none of us picked up on the clue. The terrain was somewhat rocky, but everyone agreed we were on a road or path, of sorts, and that it must lead somewhere. The heat was nearly unbearable as we walked. One thing seemed certain: I was finally beginning to figure out the locator, and it appeared now that we were at least heading in the right direction.

It was fortunate that we came across a spring. Stopping to rest, the six of us enjoyed the cold, refreshing water bubbling up out of the rocks. I removed my sweater while the others also shed extra layers of clothes. It was hard to miss the purple and blue bruising on my right wrist from the tight grip Hesiod had on me. It was tender to the touch, so the cold water felt really good.

The water from the spring flowed into a nearby pool, and Annie threw her denim jacket aside and unlaced her black combat boots, saying she planned to jump in. Sam and Sean were both busy speculating that this was a sign we were getting close to a village or settlement and paused only to overrule Annie’s suggestion. Lily, Morgan, and me, on the other hand, were more concerned with where and when we were, for it was evident to everyone that this was nowhere near Dallas, and it was anyone’s guess what time period we were in.

I started to wonder if we were even still on Earth. I knew by now that no range limits existed with the Pyxis device. From what Sosthenes had explained while we were in the chamber of the Sentinels on Kalos, the Pyxis could open portals to other times, other planets, even other dimensions. It all seemed so… science fiction to me; like one of Sean’s crazy stories—almost beyond reason.

My thoughts were also consumed with what we had just witnessed. Paw-Paw’s journal took on new meaning as I contemplated the melancholy tone of what he wrote, now weighed against what I saw happen on November 22, 1963. In my heart of hearts, I wanted to do something… anything to prevent the tragedy that befell the world that day. There I was, right there with all the knowledge necessary to prevent John Kennedy’s death and I couldn’t do a thing. “How unfair,” I thought as my mind wandered back to the matter of where in universe we might be, still questioning whether we were on Earth or somewhere else in the cosmos.

As we carried on with our journey, my questions began to dwindle for the moment as the locator brought us to what seemed to be a busy village market teeming with people.

“They’re all speaking English… that’s a good sign,” Annie said, optimistically.

“No,” said Sean.
