Fifteen

“What the hell happened to you?” Cohen’s voice is angry, furious. It’s enough to make me draw away from him, even though I know that none of that is aimed at me. Merritt guides me over to a chair in the security office and urges me to sit while the guard circles the desk and comes to crouch in front of me.

His icy green eyes sweep over me, taking in the scrapes, the bruises, the torn fabric and the tear tracks on my cheeks.

“Who did this to you?” He can tell just by looking exactly happened.

I try to answer him, try to make my voice work, but my throat feels raw and painful, and when I move my lips, no sound comes out.

Cohen looks up at Merritt, who drops into the chair next to me, lacing her fingers through mine. “Gabe Verver.”

He swears under his breath. “Do you know where he went?”

Merritt’s lips thin out. “I don’t think you’ll find him tonight. He was… being taken care of by some of the other students who stopped the assault.”

“They’re beating the shit out of him?” Cohen asks, his brows raised and when neither of us confirms or denies that, he gives a jerky nod. “Good. That’s fucking good. I’ll find him later and make sure it really sinks in.”

His green eyes move back to me. “You want to press charges?”

I blink at him. Do I want to press charges? That hadn’t even occurred to me. I hadn’t thought beyond just getting away from him. Merritt is the one that suggested we come here, that we report it to campus security.

But do I want this asshole to pay for what he’s done? Hell yes. I don’t want him to get the chance to do this to someone else. “Yes.” My voice comes out hoarse and scratchy.

“Good girl,” Cohen squeezes my hand quickly before, before standing and rounding the security desk to grab his phone. “I’m just going to snap a few pictures and then I want you to go to the clinic and have them check you out. Make sure they give you a report. You can come back tomorrow and we’ll go over your statement. I’ll start the report tonight and add your stuff tomorrow.”

I nod along with him because everything sounds so damn logical when he lays it all out like that. I appreciate the straightforward list of tasks to accomplish. It gives me something to focus on beyond what nearly happened to me.

Cohen helps me to my feet, his hand warm and solid on mine, offering me comfort in the same way that Fielder’s embrace had. He snaps a few pictures of me before he accompanies us to the clinic where the doctor on call tsks over all of my injuries and makes a thorough report over everything she noted.

Merritt wants me to go back to the dorms, take a shower and try to get some rest, but I want to just get this over with so we trudge
