Chapter 9

You don’t think there are any remnants of that stuff stuck to my tongue, do you? The hex bag was made of burlap, Raven. What if bits and pieces of whatever was inside the thing is now inside of me? I've been playing with it for a month! Sweet angel of mercy, am I going to turn into a zombie?

“Leo, you aren’t going to turn into a hexed anything,” I reassured him, though I wasn’t so sure that others like Mr. Boon wouldn’t soon be walking around Paramour Bay. “I feel bad leaving Mom to clean up the mess we left behind.”

“There are two bright spots to that situation,” Heidi pointed out as we continued on our way across the street to the teashop. We had our own hex bag to search for, which Leo had all but confirmed would be somewhere on the floor of the store. We were pretty sure that the hex bag had come from the bakery. “Madam Rose won’t think it odd at all that your mother is searching the shop, and she managed to convince Madam Rose that the bag was filled with candy to hand out to the trick or treaters tonight.”

Needless to say, my attempt to calm down what I knew would be Leo’s escalating terror of a situation that had turned rather dire had been for naught. Leo had quickly opened his mouth to drop the small burlap sack after Madam Rose had asked her question aloud.

Unfortunately, the string must have snagged and gotten caught on one of his teeth.

It didn’t fall to the ground as he’d expected, and that’s when the chaos had ensued.

Let’s just say that it had been my mother who had caught the crystal ball as it had precariously come close to rolling off the table after having been knocked off its stand by a scrambling cat.

I got the hex bag unstuck, didn’t I? And we are clearly not focusing on the right thing here. What if I turn into a zombie? You know, my tongue is tingling. That could be the first sign of zombie poisoning.

“Leo, you somehow managed to knock two racks of merchandise to the floor, spill Madam Rose’s tea all over the counter, and send her tarot cards to the ground as if they were part of that fifty-two card pickup game,” I muttered as we stepped up on the curb in unison. “I still can’t believe that I didn’t think about looking for hex bags when a voodoo priestess was first mentioned. That’s their most popular means of dealing with lingering incantations.”

“It also means that the voodoo priestess herself was in your shop,” Heidi pointed out, glancing over her shoulder. I had no doubt that she was making sure a zombie wasn’t about to sneak up on us. “We just have to narrow things down. We technically have three suspects we don't know. Sally, Kim, and Meghan. Wouldn’t you agree?”

What if I’m a secret zombie? I bet my soulmate never thought of that situation.
