Buck Halliday left his sorrel behind the stables and walked toward a lighted window at the front of the house.

The window drapes were still pulled back, and through the gap he saw Larraine Rushton standing wet and naked in a bath tub, her body glistening in the light thrown from a table lamp. As she toweled herself down, the silhouette of her breasts rose and fell with the motion of her arms.

Halliday stepped away from the window and took the steps to the front door. He turned the knob and found the front door was unlocked. He went inside, closed the door behind him, and after a casual inspection of the roomy front of the house, poured himself a drink and settled down on a plush-covered divan.

The furniture was old, the carpet well-worn, the walls needed paint and the air was musty. Yet Halliday felt strangely at home—more than he had felt in any house for a long time.

Remembering other women and other houses, he had almost forgotten them because he knew he didn’t belong. With them, there’d been moments of pleasure, but always he had been able to make the break. He had no doubt that it wouldn’t be any different here.

Larraine Rushton came into the room, a towel around her body. Her hair was wet and untidy and hung about her shoulders. She showed no hint of surprise at finding Halliday in her living room—nor was she angry at him letting himself in.

“So, you came back.”

“Your man made a mess of it.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“In your shoes, I would have said the same thing ... if you were wearing any.”

He finished his drink and got to his feet, unbuckling his gunbelt and letting it fall to the floor.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Figured it might get in the way when we got down to serious business.”

Color flooded Larraine’s cheeks as she pulled the towel tighter about her body, her bottom lip starting to tremble. “Serious business?”

Halliday moved across the room toward her.

“Sending Jim Hanover after me was a foolish thing to do. You could have got him killed.”

“I knew you’d be more than a match for him, for anybody, for that matter. Desperate people can do desperate things. I couldn’t think of any other way to get you to change your mind.”

“That way was stupid,” he said quietly.

Larraine wanted to turn and run, yet her legs seemed glued to the spot.

“I’m sorry. All I know is that I have to win this fight and I can’t do it on my own. I told you that in town and I meant it. I will do anything to defeat Jay Denton and hold onto what my father and brother gave their lives for.”

“It will mean killing.”

“If someone deserves to die, so be it.”

“You could get hurt.”

“I have to do something ... you know that.”

“Then I’ll stay.”

“Oh, Buck ... you don’t know how grateful I am,” she said, and let the towel drop to the floor ...
