P

The glorious, spicy scent of our state flower, the peony, fills the springtime air here in Indiana. Victorians called these spring blooms the flower of “bashfulness,” but they aren’t bashful in taking root. Early pioneer women loved planting peonies, a hardy plant that can live longer than a century. That is why Indiana has so many.

Some peonies have single flowers, others have double blooms and their colors can range from blood-red to carmine, pink, and white. Although they usually grow to be three feet tall, they can reach a height of 12 feet.

P is for Peony, which gives us one of spring’s sweetest smells.

Kneel on your knee, sniff and see the flowers colored in scarlet and pastels.
