Balance

The balance positions on the beam range from a classical position such as a handstand or single leg balance to very original shapes or leg positions that demonstrate great skill, strength and originality. Different body parts can be used as the base for the balance, as can be seen in the unique shoulder balance. Imaginative ways of entering into and moving out of the balance add interest and variety to the beam routines.

The technique for the free walkover.

Artistic Expression

The movements that are used to link the beam elements together usually involve co-ordinated arm and body movements performed within traditional dance elements and leaps or jumps. The movements are choreographed to show artistic expression and to reflect the personal characteristics of each gymnast. Great effort and imagination goes into ensuring variety and originality in the movements.
